Wrapping barrels?

I am a little hesitant to use tape, is there some other way? I wold love to find a sleeve or something that I could just slip over my barrel.

I use stuff called Vet Wrap. It's what the vet uses for wrapping injuries, etc. on animals. It come in a lot of colors, including white. Most farm stores, etc. will have it or under $2 per roll which will cover a gun easily.

It's very stretchy and adheres to itself. No mess when you take it off.

If you get two colors and alternate them, it will almost look like a 'wild' camo job.. I used dark green and black last year and it worked pretty well.

I use Camo Form, it is a self clinging stretch wrap the only adheres to itself. It comes in different style of camo. You can find it at Walmart, Bass Pro, Cabelas, Sportsman's Ware house. I can't think of the companies name who actually makes it. If you google it using images, you can see what it looks like. I like it because you can actually take it off and reuse it.

I heard there is sometimes a problem with wrapping your barrel. Thay say that it could mess with the harmonics of the particular barrel and change your zero. I would test your zero one day and then wrap it and check your zero again. I feel that it would only matter with the long shots beyond 200 yards. I've not tested this theory yet, so I can't say for sure.

I use the camo form strech wrap too. What I like about is it stays put. Camo tape drove me crazy because it kept peeling up at the seams when handling the gun.

The stuff I used(kinda like friction tape)didn't peel up too awful bad, but come to find out, it gets SOAKED when it rains...I just had to peel it all off of my shotgun about 15 minutes ago...time to bust out the acetone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif...glad the bluing was already gone along time before I ever got the gun.

I have my 22-250 with a stainless barrel wrapped with the camo wrap. I havent noticed a change in zero. And yes it will soak up alot of water. I just take it off as soon as Im done hunting, dry it out and put it back on.

Depends on length and dia. of barrel. Anytime something touches barrel it can change the bullets path. If i use camo tape i will rezero my rifle with the tape on and then leave it on till end of season..T.A.

I didn't see a change in impact when wrapping my barrel and forend of the stock with the camo form wrap. However, that's not to say it can't happen. It is always a good idea to check just to be sure.

I have wrapped my barrels for many years with the camo tape and have never had a problem with the "zero".

It can give you problems if the barrel is touching the stock when the tape is applied, but other than that, you should never have a problem with the "zero".

But now, I just use a camo paint, much easier, cleaner and doesn't absorb water.

I use the same thing. I wrap my AR in white Vet Wrap when winter rolls in and it stays on till the snow is gone. Works just fine and its cheap to boot....

I use a gun sock on my AR. I haven't noticed any problem with accuracy. Also, I use gun chaps (can't remember the name) on my 6mm-06 Sendero. I bust groundhogs with it near 400 yards. It too doesn't seem to mess up the barrel harmonics and accuracy is very good. Another thing I tried was white self-clinging bandage wrap that I got at Wal-Mart. Used it some last winter. It worked well until I removed it a few times. It doesn't last long, but works for a quick cover up.

Rifle on the table has a bright stainless barrel,
so I used the camo cover. Doesn't seem to affect
accuracy at all.

I use camo form on mine. In fact, I buy every roll I can find around here to cover other things. I have covered my stool legs, put some around my tripod to break up the outlines, and several other uses.

Also, welcome to the board from another Arkansan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Where in this strange land are you from? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Whether or not your accuracy depends alot on the quality of the stock being used. I learned the hard way that wrapping a flimsy stock, like what savage uses, will most definately change your zero. It was a while ago I made that mistake, but if I remember right, my point of impact lowered around 4-5 inches. I was using the same camo vet wrap that is shown above. I just don't take the chance anymore and wrap my barrel only to where it meets the forearm. I would be hesitant to wrap you gun and resight because heat, moisture, cold, etc. can cause the wrap to expand/contract creating a real nightmare.
