I never really have experimented to see waht ammo my trusty 'ol 22 likes. I ALWAYS have shot federal bulk box from wally whirled. The rifle is a tack driver with that junk, except for the dud rounds. I just tried some of the fancy Aguila Super duper screaming hot Hyper velocity stuff and man, my groups TRIPLED in size @ 65 yards!

The two best rimfire rounds i have found for hunting and all around shooting is the Winchester 40 gr Power Point HP and the CCI Mini Mag HP /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

CCI Mini-mags. With my 10-22, if I switch brands of ammo, the groups always open up for about 20 rounds, then shrink back down and stabilize. You may be experiencing that. That Federal and Remington bulk ammo is actually pretty accurate, in my experience, but if I mix them together in a banana clip, the groups open up to about 4 times the size as when I'm only running one or the other. It has something to do with barrel fouling and bullet lubricant used is all I can figure.
I used to shoot a lot of CCI Stingers. They may not be the most accurate, but if you connect they are devestating on small game.

federal classic solids or the ely scorpions. If I change ammo it takes about 1/2 box before it settles down. If I clean the barrel scratch the ely's until it gets fouled again.
RR

I like the subsonics, especially Ely and Lapua subsonic hollow points. They are accurate enough for head shots and fully expand when body shots are required. Also, they are nice and quiet.

My marlin likes Winchester Hollow Points Xpert. I only shot two squirrels(not many where I live, 2 in about every 3 years is the norm) and it does a nice job.

I have had more experience shooting cottontails with my 22. I only had one scream when I shot it but it was only a second. The Xperts do a pretty dang good job.

Federal, Federal, Federal!!! Mine shoots nothing better than the afor mentioned 550rd bulk packs from WallyWorld. And honestly my 39A is pretty dang accurate with CCI CB longs. But I prefer the ol' .17hmr this day and age.

For Squirrel hunting with a 22 I prefer the slower target rounds. I get very little meat damage. I can hear the whap and know the hit was made. I like the Federal Gold medal match and the Eley target stuff in my 541.

has anyone tried the new federal automatch 325rd bulk pack yet? i seen them on a shooting show and they said they are desinged for semiauto's with a vel of 1200fps

Well, 139 rounds later and my rifle is slinging them vertically. SHEESH! My ol' browning does not like them. Too bad I already ordered 500 0f them for a whopping $40 shipped. Ugh. Anybody looking for a great deal on Aguila Super max 22 LR? (30 grain HP @ 1750 fps) Make me an offer!

Federal champion bulk out of my 452, less than 1/2inch at 50 yds. I practice head shot's only on squirrels, and it kills 'em dead, maybe not blood and brains everywhere like stingers, but dead nonetheless.

You guys are talking about the eating variety squirrels, I was talking about the garden pest variety we have out here in the west. Stingers or other high-velocity hollow points may not be the best choice if you plan on eating what's left. My bad. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm guessing you arent cleaning the residue of lube and powder from the previous brand of ammo before going to a "new"? Yeah, that's normal.

My brand for plinking is win Xpert with the fairly prounounced hollowpoint. They are hard hitters. If I want better accuracy maybe Dynapoints if available. The Xperts group between .50 and 1" at 50yds. I really like to have hunting rounds hitting 1/2" or less at 50.

i use remington. i used to go for the really cheap stuff with with a flat point, but had misfeeds in my semi-auto. the remington ammo is plenty accurate enough for me. not the cleanest ammo, but the 22lr is all about having fun.

No, I'm not cleaning anything. I was doing group tests and switching ammo brands to see the effect. It's a heavy stainless target barrel and I've found it's not a good idea to scrub the barrel more than about every 3,000 rounds or so. After a thorough cleaning it takes quite a while to foul and group well, then it's no better than before the cleaning. I talked to a couple of guys at the range that are into the highly modified 10-22's and they convinced me that cleaning stainless target barrels is not really a good thing. After a lot of tests, I'm convinced they are right.

My point was, don't mix ammo types if you want good groups, use up one brand, then make a clean break to the new batch, and expect your groups to open up for 20 or 30 rounds before they "settle back in", and it may not be to the same point you were sighted in at before you switched.
Trying one box of new ammo and deciding it's not grouping well may not be a legitimate test, from my personal experience. Looks like Perferator has seen the same thing when switching brands.

When testing .22's for accuracy I have 33 different loads from plinking to Olympic. Generally in most rifles you will see vast differences in accuracy between loads they like and don't like. I have fired these loads from 10/22's to Match grade Model 52 Winchesters and such. What I have seen is super high vel loads such as Stingers/Yellow Jackets are not match grade fodder for hunting. They produce fairly good groups in some rifles but not head shots on squirrels to 50 yds. Target vel ammo such as RC has mentioned generally produces top accuracy. For the most part, Winchester .22 LR Solids Super-X can be hard to beat in truly good rifles even by Eley. Super-X power points are really good as well. It all depends on the rifle/shooter and quality of the ammo for the most part to shrink groups. As stated here many times, it takes testing to see what works for real.

In my 452 CZ, Lapua and RWS R-50 can head shoot a squirrel at 50 yds non-stop as long as the wind is not blowing. Power-Points do about 1/2" from my heavy barrel 10/22's. Have a Winchester 52 and 52B target rifles that will do 1/2 at 100 if the wind is not blowing.

Experience with the heavy weight loads have not been good at all.
