Wv hunting law

Yoteless in Ohio

New member
From what I understand, after March 1st in wv you can only hunt coyotes in open fields during the daytime, and your firearm must be unloaded and cased while traveling to and from said field even when walking. Is that correct? I am assembling this from what I have found and what I have been told.

Yes it is correct , but according to the DNR folks I have talked to,I have been told that if you have to walk through woods it has to be. You might want to call and get that clarified.

It's amazing what politicians can do to hunting and shooting. Seems there is no lack of stupidity, indeed it seems to abound in state capitals.

man that stinks bye the time i put the bipod and all on mine it wont fit in my cases well guess i could stick it in my bow case well maybe if i see one walking in it will be patiant enough to wait on me to get ready

It was my understanding from who I talked to , that if you were walking through the woods to a field thats how its supposed to be . I was told a logging road also counted. Thats what was explained to me .

John is correct. After all seasons are closed on Feb. 28th, you can still hunt coyotes, but you must be calling an open feild, and your firearm MUST be in the case until you set up and start callin, IN THE FEILD. If you're 5' back in the woods, your gun better be in a case. I know this from first hand experiance!

I bought my license for west va. two years ago and i questioned that very same thing and they told me if i did not like it go to Charleston and try to change it so I told them that I would do better than that I would buy my out of state from now on in Ohio...it was explained to me that it was to keep people from poaching squirrels ( I swear )

Yeah,

Several of us tried to get some of the coyote hunting regulations in WV changed last year. Only change made was to allow green lights for night hunting. Just have to try again this year. Watch for the WVDNR Regulation meetings in your area and be sure to attend!!

Jim

Yeah I had high hopes for the petition you had last year Jim. I had 70 some people sign it and send it in. And all we got was the use of green lights. All I ever hear is talk to poloticians. Like they really care... Let me know what I can do to help if you guys want to try again this year.

Still can't decide what an open field would be and how big it would have to be. It could be a one acre food plot or a hundred acre fallow field, five hundred acres of bare ground or heck a grassed over strip mine. Without any more description it is up to the game wardens imagination or lack thereof.

Leaving it up to a game wardens imagination. Is scarey.
I heard threw the grape vine there might be some changes coming. They might let us use center fire's 22cal or below. For night hunting.

Fairmont, Lewisburg, Martinsburg, Milton, Spencer,Summersville.

Interesting... I was pushing for this really hard last year. I thought it had been turned down. If we get that passed through along with fox and bobcat at night, all will be well in the world!

Let's hope that you are right, and I am wrong!

I haven't had much time to keep up with it lately, but if you guys hear of any regulation meetings in Kanawha, let me know and I'll go to it.
