You howl, coyote answers, now what?

I did a female invitation howl this morning and had what sounded to be a male howl back at me twice about 200 yards off in a swamp. I waited a minute and howled again but no response. Waited another 15 minutes but he never showed. What should I have done in this situation? Did I screw up by howling back after he answered me? Any advice would be appreciated. Jim

I am curious to hear what others have to say as well.I am new to howling as well.I have experieced them coming in quitely after they howl back. I usually follow up my howls with a distress and it has worked. Just had it work this morning. Two came in and I got one of them.

Is that the only sound you used to try to trigger it to come to the call? Did you try other sounds?

Coyote hunting, much like Muskey fishing, is about triggering the animal. I know that when Muskey fishermen are fishing in shallow water and sight fishing, When they see a fish, They dont just try one lure and leave. They try several in hopes of finding the one that will trigger the fish. Coyote hunting is the same in that way. Many times in ND durring the day I've had yotes in the scope on stand several hundred yds away. They hardly acknowledge the call other then look my way. In this situation I start going through the sounds till I find one that gets him comming. Somtimes I'll hit the sound that sends him running at me or somtimes I'll hit a sound that he just wants to investigate and he'll take his sweet old time getting into rifle range. Many times it does'nt work at all but you wont get anything if you just walk away without trying.

My advise is to try a bunch of sounds to try to trigger the animal in that situation. You know you have a listener. Now give him what he wants. If the animal is only 200yds away make sure the sounds are not loud and give it maybe 30secs. before trying a new sound. I'd stay with each sound for one minute tops when they are that far away. If you find the right sound, the yote will be there in less then 25 seconds from 200yds.

I did try several different distress calls and some KiYi's also. I gave it a good 20 minutes after I heard him and tried several calls intermittently. Thanks for the advice Phil and next time I will just keep trying until I find something he likes (that is if I have it in my limited repertoire!).

Phil, I couldn't agree more. With the coyote having over 30 some odd vocalisations I sure don't hurt to try another sound. The key is to make sure of what you're saying to them.

Capt Jim in your situation I would have really poured it on them with kiyi's or female chirps, normally you will get a response. After the coyote responds I stick with coyote sounds again and shoot them a male challenge, boy does this ever crack em! Now they're sounding off and you can't get a word in egdewise. So while they're making a rukus continue male challenges and get your safe off cuz they're right in your lap: unless they get your wind! If you're in an area where you can see 300yds or more downwind you should get fur!!

Good luck

Captain Jim,

The advice here is all wrong. These guys really do not know what they are saying. When you get a coyote to respond after you have made a few howls, you need to get up and leave immediately. Then once you are back at your truck you pick up a cell phone and call someone, say.....Me. Then once I get to your location you are free to leave, I will finish the rest from that point.
Just to review because this is very important:
1. Locate coyote
2. Leave and call Yuppiehunter
3. Show Yuppiehunter the area of coyote
4. Yuppie does the rest and posts story on Predator Masters.
5. Yuppie receives praise for his kill

Just to be clear, the advice you have in previous posts is all legit. Sounds good to me.

Good Luck

Sometimes not saying anything is the right thing to. I usually give them a a howl back, wiat 5 min. Lots of times they show up after just that. Then when i see them i coax them in with something.

If they don't show then i either go to a distress or a ki-yi/coyote distress. The coyote sounds work the best.

Giving him the challage howls is good to, but don't over due it. I like to stick with more younger coyote, in case its not a super dominant male.

DOn't be afraid to give it some time to, howling for me makes me sit longer. I have had them in my lap after my first set of 2-3 howls, other times its been 35-40 min. If i know they are there i give them time, they got all day and i am sure they are not looking for a bullet.

Good luck. Try him tommorow with all the info on here, but they don't always come, and i wouldn't sit in the same spot either. That by itself costed me a bunch one night, there were mad and coming, but i had missed one off that same general side and i think they knew better.

Thanks for the advice and it sounds like there are several things that could work. Based upon what you guys are saying I'm thinking that (just like my bird dogs) each coyote probably has a different personality ( and place in the pecking order) and what may work on one, won't work on another. I'm going to give it a try again this evening from the other side of the swamp and see what happens.
Yuppiehunter, I'm hunting right across from a diary farm and there's an alfalfa field on the other side. Shouldn't be too hard to find me but if you're not there by 4:30, I'm going alone.

I howl on almost every stand and if I get no answer I switch to distress, but when I get a response I stay with their language. If they answer with a challenge I will mock the sound and probably shoot 8 out of 10, but if they answer less agresive I have not totally figured out what they want to here. I would like someone to tell me were I could here what the female chirp sounds like, I have never heard it and would love to have it in the old trick boxs.

Check out foxpro website, they have alot on sounds on there that you can preview. I thought they had chirps but i am not sure. good luck

OK, this all sounds like good advice. Is this standard for all situations? I have located a bunch of coyote by howling, but NEVER get a single response. It is always from a group of coyote, family groups I figure. Does the same apply to working groups of coyote? I have yet to get one to show it's self in this situation. These are always pre-dawn & dawn encounters. I am at my wits end. Worked a group of them this past Sat. Same old results. They answer, but won't budge. I wish just once I would get a lone response to try. How do you fellas handle bunched up coyote?

Pretty much the same way I mentioned above. I probly shoulda mentioned that I wont go through every sound I have before I leave. That would be like 28 sounds. I'll use a few totaly different sounding prey distress. Maybe rabbit, bird, fawn. I few coyote vocals, and maybe a coyote/fox fight or coyote raccoon fight. Some just wont be triggered and I've learned to accept that without getting too P.O.'ed.

If I have a coyote comming intially and he hangs up..... I'll try to coax it in with lipsqweeks or somthing very soft sounding. If that does'nt work I'll take the shot if I'm confident with the range.
