Thinkin bout puttin my Nikon Monarch on my 270 and buyin a different scope for the 204 and got it down between these two scopes besides the difference in price how would you experts out there compare these two scopes?

For the Zeiss I was gonna go with the 4.5-14X44 with the mil dot reticle with side focus

The Leupold was gonna be the 4.5-14X40 AO with varmint huters reticle

Thanks,
Luke

I have always been a Leupold fan and have never used any Zeiss optics before but have read good things on them.
I know for a fact that you cannot go wrong with a scope that has the gold ring on it.

Trapper....I don't see where Zeiss offers a true mil-dot scope in any of their scope lines. Maybe you are thinking of their Rapid-Z reticles.

I have a 6.5-20x50 with a Rapid-Z Varmint reticle and it is great for it's intended purpose. Their ballistic Rapid-Z calculator is a great tool to work with.

I would take the Zeiss w/side parallax adjustment.

Reticle 43 has some dots... not a full mil-dot from edge to edge though from what I can see.

OP, I'm having the Conquest vs. VX-3 dilemma right now, too!

That very well may be right, as I only have MFG #'s w/ brief descriptions on my computer. But yes, the description was #43 mil-dot.

sandhills...you are correct. I could not find anything on their website that tells what the value, mils or moa, of their dot spacing.

Zeiss has a rebate going on now. $150 cash back w/ the purchase of a 6.5-20x50 w/ the Rapis-Z varmint reticle. I got my rebate 3 days ago. Not a Visa card like they said, but a rebate check.

i think you're decision may come down to tube diameter. if you will need more verticle adjustment then i'd go with the Leupold (30mm tube). if you're looking for glass clarity i'd opt for the zeiss conquest (1" tube). i've got both scopes and the glass is noticably better on the zeiss but it only has 40 inches (not MOA) of vertical adjustment.

Gotta agree with Nightcaller.

Zeiss optics are hard, if not impossible, to beat. But I'd also say you really won't go wrong with either scope.

The Zeiss w/ the rapid Z-1000 reticle is quite impressive. I'm currently only running mildot scopes but if I ever have a good 1000yd gun it'll probably end up wearing the Zeiss.

I like the etched Z-Plex reticle (stays dark all the time), and fixed eye relief of my Zeiss.

Pretty impressed with the optics, though I'm far from an expert in that regard as this is the first "nice" scope I've ever owned.

Yup. I do like the Zeiss Conquest, and my Leupolds have done a fine job for me for the last 35 or so years. But having owned both I will take the Zeiss over the Leupold.

I coulda lived with my Conquest, I guess, if I had to. Problem was, I sent it away to have a target style elevation turret installed and the turret was inaudible and pretty mushy feeling. Not positive at all, like my Leupolds. What's more, the Zeiss turrets spin the opposite way of Leupold turrets. That drove me nuts. Traded it for a VX3........

Yea if you are going to spin turrets you might be happier with a Leupold. The (Edit "Hunter" turrets) turrets on my Conquest are just as 2muchgun describes. The Leupy probably has a lot more adjustment range as well with most models.

My Zeiss turrets felt exactly the same as the turrets on a Super Sniper I owned for a short time. Very unimpressive. Leupold does have more adj. on most models, and the turrets are audible and crisp on all of mine.......

I have and like both brands in various sizes and in binos. The backwards knobs on the zeiss annoy me from time to time but I dont change loads often so I am not using them alot. Zeiss seems a touch better in low light but not by much. Really you would be happy with either one.
For whatever its worth my 2 favorite rifles wear zeiss but the leupold binos get used more.
