I finally got out again today and am hunting an area I've never hunted before. I made two blank stands in more open country and the moved down in the mesquite bottom.

One minute the coyote comes in out of the mesquite about seventy yards out. I let him come in until he stopped , put the crossbars right on his.chest. CLICK, I must have forgot to chamber a round. I throw the bolt and rammed the next round into the back of the first, and the coyote is standing there looking at the decoy. I cleared the two and jacked another into the chamber and again CLICK. Coyote is still standing there but starting to look my way. I clear that round and looked at it and realized I loaded the 223.mag with 222s. I grabbed a round out of the butt bag, got it chambered and coyote was still standing there. I finally put a 62grnSP.in his chest.

All this took place at 28 paces, who says decoys don't work

Time to go home I think I used up all my luck for today.

The new rifle is blooded.

:ROFLMAO: Glad to see I'm not the only one. When we figure we have made every mistake there is to make.......we manage to find yet one more. That's what keeps us coming back.

ETA: I'm a firm believer in decoys, always set up w/call; its bailed me out multiple times. Have had one or two shy from scent over the years when I let them get too close, but I think the scent on call would have been enough by itself in those cases.

Been there, done that, except I had the correct ammo but the wrong gun.

I did find that 6x47 Lapua ammo in a 6.5x47 Lapua barrel isn't very accurate......🤔
 
I even load HP bullets in the 222 and SP bullets in the 223 and I just happened to have 10 test rounds of 45gr SP in the 222 in the truck go figure and yes I mark cartridges on the side of the stock. AND still get it wrong.
 
Wow glad luck was on your side yesterday. That’s the only think I don’t like about the 20 practical. I won’t take it and a 223 on a trip together and always load from their marked boxes right before the hunt. Great job keeping your composure! Haha
 
I'm really pretty good about ammo as I shoot a 22-204, 6mm-204, 25-204, 20P, 223, 6x45mm and the 222s so watching what ammo I have is pretty much drilled in. Too much stuff going on and didn't pay attention. That's why the rifles are labeled as most of them have camo on the barrels.
 
Pretty exciting few seconds I’ll bet!!! Not an issue with me. It is either .243 or 12gu—-.308 hasnt been out of the safe in decades and the .204 in about 10yrs since our ground hog population plummeted.

That's a hard question.

I pretty much was the first to cat the 204 to .257 (2005), there were a few of us that ordered 22-204 reamers in 2006 and the off shoot of that was I put a 6mm pilot on the 22-204 reamer and re-chambered a 6x47 Rem to 6mm-204. So the 25-204 and 22-204 are high on the list. My 6x45 circa 1990 is very accurate and my first wildcat plus it is on a rifle I bought new in 66, so it has sentimental value also. The 20P's are just fun. The 222's, one I won the Egg Shoot with, one is a high end Sako and the third is a Rem 788 I just put together and is again a sweet shooter. So all but the 6mm-204 have equal space with the 6mm-204 covered by the 25-204 and 6x45 so it would be at the bottom of the list, in fact I pulled the barrel and built a 20P on the action.
