Your personal best with a rimfire

I seen a thread on here talking about 22lr and it got me thinking.

What’s your personal best shot with rimfire at long range? I’m not asking for any other reason than just fun.

Prairie dogs, chucks, targets, whatever.

I’ve got a range here at the house, that I shoot once in awhile at the little steel spinner targets. It’s around 150ish yards. I’ve tried a few times when I lived in Wyoming to shoot prairie dogs at 200-250 with a 22lr, just messing around.

I’d bet there’s some cool stories and pretty nice groups from you guys on here.

My favorite thing to do is fill up half liter Pepsi bottles with colored water, and spread them out from 100 to 400 or so yards.

Wow that’s a sweet setup lol I love the bench on the back of the four wheeler.

I see you’re shooting that Federal Value pack ammo in those pictures. Does ammo make that much of a difference at extended range with a rimfire too? I mean, I’m sure it does to some standpoint for sure. I just didn’t know how “do or die” it is

Does ammo make a difference? You betcha! My rifles have a definite preference for ammunition. And some ammunition is WAY more consistent than others.
Really? I figured the obvious, shooting rimfire matches, there would be better ammo than others. I never realized that they would be that finicky though. That’s pretty neat

The "bench" is a big box I built to haul all my stuff out to shoot. Hart rest, rear bag, bipods, tripods, ammo, binos, rangefinder, etc.

It's big enough to hold 7 milk jugs across, two deep, & still have room for the other stuff. I use the jugs when I'm playing out to a mile or so.

As far as 22 ammo goes, I try to find the cheapest bulk ammo that shoots the best, as I don't want to spend a quarter a shot just to play. I bought two cases of the Federal stuff, as I was wanting to go out west for squirrel shooting that ultimately never happened. It shoots dam good. Of course the orange gun in the pics is a Remington 40-X single shot in a McMillan stock.

That’s awesome. Love the set up.

That’s interesting on the ammo. That’s pretty neat.

Just to be clear ......... What ALF is doing and what I do are entirely two different things. I shoot match ammunition because I'm looking for itty-bitty groups and bragging rights on the clubhouse wall. Egotistical? Not really. Great competition? Absolutely. And getting to drop a zinger to the other guys is great fun.

No, I totally understand that. I think it’s a lot of fun both ways. There used to be a ton of local guys that got together and just did bragging rights shoots around here, 10 years ago. They’ve since quit doing it and I sure wish I would’ve got more involved. Always a ton of fun.

A lot can be learned from RF shooting. I was a pretty decent HP competitor, having shot HP for a quarter century when I was coerced into shooting smallbore position matches. My HP scores jumped by double digits after a while on the smallbores. The reduced recoil really makes errors, which had been hidden by recoil, very obvious.

Alf, please tell us about the rifle.
The rifle was born in 1973, & I'm the 2nd owner. 24" barrel, with high gloss bluing reminiscent of the Remington Varmint rifles of that period. I bought it sometime in the early 90's. It's kind of a rarish model. No doubt it can keep up with Hidalgo at the bench.....;)
I love to shoot groups, but LR plinking is my thing, rimfire or center fire.

The latest update to the gun is, I actually traded it this last fall for an almost new Vudoo single shot BR model with a Jewell trigger. I bolted it into the orange McMillan, and topped it with the Sightron off of the 40-X. Luckily it shoots the bulk stuff pretty good. I had a few SK Plus rounds left, and shot a ten shot .75" group at 100 yards. I'm sure it'll shoot better with the "good" stuff.

10 shot 3/4”?!?! Holy smokes

Oh crap. I didn't mean that! No way was I trying to undermine or insult your rifle or skill. I was just saying my fun factor is groups, and you're enjoying a different fun factor.
We're good, I didn't interpret it other way than you prefer groups, I prefer LR plinking.

Shot a red fox at over 400 yards. Can't remember how high I held but it was " in feet" lol
Checking the drop chart on my Federal 36 grain HP ammo, you need to be 63" high at 100 yards to hit at 400.

Not sure what mid point trajectory would be.

I've hit my water bottles at 400, and the bullet poked a hole through, and surprisingly, none of the water ran out.

Probably not the best, but surely the luckiest rimfire shot I ever fired was with an Astra Bear Cub. Cute little pistol, w/barrel about 1.5", a horrible trigger and almost non-existent sights chambered for .22 short only. As saying goes, its better to be lucky than good.:ROFLMAO:

When I was in high school, went quail hunting with several friends, one of which was from Louisiana. There were more meadow larks that day than quail, and my LA friend urged me to shoot a meadowlark for him. He said when he was growing up in LA they ate meadowlarks. Not wanting to waste a shotgun shell, I (jokingly) agreed to shoot one with the little Astra. Resting on the car, fired one shot hitting a meadow lark @ 35-40 yards (its been a long time!).
