Archery hunts for coyotes, anyone doing it?

My early hunting life centered around bow hunting, before I could carry a rifle alone I had my trusty bow, rabbits, pheasants, squirrels ended up on the table at home. I hunted deer with a bow until I moved to MN in the early seventies and had to choose whether I bought an archery tag or firearms, As my whole in-law family hunted with rifles and my wife had been hunting since early in her life with a rifle, the bow got put away.

Since retirement the bow is really getting more interesting, I've done quite a bit of bow fishing, got interested in 3D(local club shoot) and then predators and that isn't going too well. I missed two the first year(two years ago) and last year was a bust health issues kept me out of the field and nor practicing so I stuck to the rifle for the hunts I got in. Hopefully this year will be better.

I built a small range at my house, and try and shoot 20-30 arrows a day, surprising how hard it is to draw the bow after even one day off. Having a range at home is nice, my fur shed is my shooting stand also.

I haven't gone out to specifically target them but if I'm bowhunting and glass up a coyote you can bet I'm attempting to lip squeak him in.
So far the trick seems to be setting up in such a way that you have lots of cover to mask the movement of your draw.
Iv gotten shots at 4 and only killed one. Trying to get a range and draw on something as fast and flighty as a coyote is extremely tricky lol
 
Shot at 3 out of a tree and killed 2. Then I got to thinking that he next time I do that there will probably be a 'slammer' catch me grabbing the bow-now if I am buck hunting I AM BUCK HUNTING, just in case.
 
I have slid arrows through two coyotes and have missed 3 I think. Not targeting them specifically. Just targets of opportunity while deer hunting.

I love archery, but it would be tough for me to carry a bow when targeting coyotes. I just really want to put the odds in my favor when one shows up.

I do enjoy bowfishing though. Kinda got screwed outta that this spring by having carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists 3 weeks apart!

When deer hunting, regardless of after a specific buck, and a coyote shows up, it then becomes a coyote hunt. Same when I’m turkey hunting.
 
I killed one while deer hunting. He came slipping by and I stopped him and put a slick trick through him.

There's a guy on youtube that does it.

You’re more than likely referring to Tim Wells. The guy is an outright killer with his bow. But then he also spear hunts dangerous game like Grizzly Bear and Cape Buffalo…

Something has to be loose in his wiring! Lol
 
I got to the dump and then had to do battle with my internet provider. If you look closely you can see a couple holes in the aluminum at the top of the bale shelter from when I started. Things are getting better.

Due to age and eyesight I can't use a peep on the string so I started playing with a red dot on a bow and it seems to work for me if I remember to turn it on(first coyote I called to the bow I forgot to turn it on and tried to just center him in the lens and slid an arrow right under him.

Red dot on a bow, the top of the crosshair is 20 yards the center 30 and the bottom is 40.

They make a mount for a red dot around $12. on Amazon and the red dot is $29. There is a company making an adjustable mount a red dot but it is $500, way out of my league

This whole rig is on the cheap, the bow is an older Diamond Archery Infinite Edge Pro, Wisker Biscuit and an inexpensive chicom hinge release, I couldn't find an American made release that was small enough for my hands.

All in all it is fun and I can practice here in town and not have to drive to a range.

I curious about the red dot. Very familiar with them on firearms. Wondering if you have played around to see if the parallax free nature of the red dot carries over to archery gear. In other words, just getting the dot on target without actually anchoring normally.

Like if you found yourself in an awkward position and couldn’t get into a good anchored shooting position. Just get that dot where it belongs and release!
