Anybody use the Hornady 75 grain 224 bullets for hunting

Stibbicat:

Use of the 75 grain necessitates a faster twist barrel e.g. 1x8 vs 1x12, for example in the .224; these bullets are always moving slower compared to a lighter bullet in the same case due to the necessitated lower charge of powder.

SO, how well do the heavy bullets expand at their lesser velocities than their faster moving, lighter weight companion 224 bullets?

(Likely [truthful] answer is not as well...)

Let's hear of some heavy bullet failures as well as successes, to truly inform.

I have started using Hornady .556 Super Performance 75 gr. and have only killed one coyote with it so far. goes in small and comes out big.

The AR I use it in is a 1:7 twist Colt. I stocked up on it so I should be good for some time.

The heavy .224 bullets are match bullets. So bullet performance varies. In the 223 rem with a fast twist 1-9 and faster they are very accurate though and that helps with their killing power. 69gr Sierras anchor coyotes just fine, the 75's are more hit and miss for DRT, but still kill effectively. In bigger cases like a swift or 22-6mm with a 1-8 twist the heavy bullets kill very well at long range. I would not call them pelt friendly, but they are good reliable killers. IME.

70gr TSX:

NOT a match bullet
Performance does NOT vary
VERY pelt friendly

This one shot clear through a whole deer. From a$$ to brisket. Another 223 bullet failure

You ever think the heavier bullets are made for slower speeds ! Slower not really that slow,I can make 3k fps in my .223AI.

2muchgun,
Do you have a load worked up you like in your AR? I am thinking about buying some 70 gr TSX's to load in my 5.56.

Yes, I have 2 that I use in my RRA 5.56 with LC brass and Fed 205M primers.

The above pics I used 24gr TAC (2.268"). The below pic, 24gr Varget (2.266"). You have to load the mag. carefully, but it will still function flawlessly if you do.

This deer was shot between the front shoulder and brisket, and then through the heart. 50 yds on the ground, through a thicket. He was chasing a doe. Shot happened very quickly and it was the only shot I would have ever had. I never found an exit, but I gave the deer to a bud. I'm thinking it may have lodged in hind quater, but no blood back there. Not sure. Very clean kill. I'm pretty sure the TSX took out a couple small tag alders on the way also. Can't ask of better from a 5.56 IMO.

That still doesn't answer my question but thank you just the same. I'm looking for the best load in 5.56x45 to cleanly kill something like white tail deer .

Google the 223 Rokslide and read several hundred pages of pros and cons of the 223 on big game, probably the most extensive thread on 223 big game kills on the internet.

Short answer, 77gr TMK, 69gr TMK
