22x47 or 22gt??

Got an itch for a new rifle with the extra action laying around. I understand a 22cm is an option but I want something else. Looking at these 2. This will mainly be used for lightweight coyote hunting. Would like to get an 18” barrel so I can suppress it. I do have a 6.5x47L so that’s a good start on the 22x47 brass but not opposed to getting into another cartridge. I like the idea of factory 22gt brass. Trying to stay in the 69gr-80gr range so looks like an 8T barrel.
Just wanted some opinions on which would do better in a shorter setup. Thx

I'm a 47 fan, having reamers for 22,6, & 6.5 versions. I have done two 22x47's dedicated to coyote hunting.

The first was a 23" Bartlein 8" twist, shot 80 Bergers at 3370 & worked fantastic.

When I got into night time hunting, I was wanting more speed, so I sold that barrel.

I then sent my reamer in & had it reground to a zero freebore, bought a Brux # 5 contour in a 12" twist, & had it cut & threaded at 18".

It now shoots 52 Bergers at 3800, but is still a virgin in it's current form.

Looking back, I kinda wished I had kept it in the original form, with the new Hornady 62 ELD-VT's available now. However, I was finally getting into suppressors, & the original barrel was marginal for being able to thread w/o resorting to adapters. I really wanted a #4 contour for the new barrel from a weight perspective, but none were available, so I bought the #5. I'm tempted to send it off & get it spiral fluted.

I know the GT is the new rage, but give me a 47 every day & twice on Sunday.....

My JGS 22x47 Lapua reamer with .075" freebore is perfect for 80 VLD's seated in the lands at 2.750" OAL.

Making 22x47 Lapua brass was a little more work when you had to start with 6.5x47 Lapua brass, but with Peterson making 6x47 Lapua brass now, it's just a simple neck down.

Hell, I made a bunch of 6x47 Lapua brass from 308 Lapua, now that was a royal PITA.......

I went the 22gt route. It loves the 62 grain eld-vt and the 85.5 bergers. I used the alpha reamer with the .169 freebore. On the next barrel I plan to use the .120 freebore reamer instead.

I have no experience with the 22x47 but have three 22GT’s and it’s by far my favorite caliber. .076 freebore and run 62eldvts at 3575 from a 22”. Run 88’s and 90’s in my 20” right around 3000 and it’s boringly accurate, then I have one I throated to .190 for 95smks at 3050. The last match I shot with it I only held off the plate at targets past 900 with a 10mph wind.

If you have the means for x47 brass that can make it easier. Pretty sure the 22 parvo is the same as 22x47 as well, might aide in your brass search. As far as GT, you can find 6gt once fired all over the place and it’s usually pretty cheap. New Hornady from GA is .75 per and I’ve had decent luck with it. I did get a bad batch one time that was torching primer pickets on the first firing. I keep my new brass for my match gun and my coyote guns usually get the 6gt brass I find laying around at the range.

Bruce Finnegan built me his version of the 22x47 for an AR-15 he calls the Hellcat. 20", 10T spiral fluted X-caliber barrel. I'm shooting a 55 Berger 3800 with no pressure and have pushed it to 4060 but the brass only lasted for about 4 reloads. PRI mag holds 7 rounds with one in the pipe. Ragged hole groups with this bullet and rarely does the bullet exit a coyote. Best varmint rifle I've ever owned!!!
