I got have 700 Remington factory 6.8 SPC it’s the ADL with the Bell and Carlson stock. Going to take it pig hunting with 110 gr VMAX. They shoot the best so far. After that I’m looking to put a new barrel on it and re chamber it something else. Any suggestions on what go to with mostly varmint and coyote hunting.
Thanks in advance

The VMax may be a bit too fragile on hogs. Haven’t used them in the 6.8, but have in probably five other cartridges. They can be very wicked. Just a thought, maybe find a tougher bullet for hogs. Hornady SST’s have a very good reputation on hogs as well as Nosler Accubonds. I have had very good success with Barnes TSX bullets from a 6mm Remington on hogs. Also I use a 130 gr. TSX in a .308. With the Barnes you can use a lighter bullet that you typically would since they penetrate so well. They hold their weight. The TSX is a pricy bullet and you can find game bullets cheaper, but if penetration is what you want, then the TSX is a very good choice. Barnes makes a 110 gr. TSX in .27 caliber that will give a little more velocity in the 6.8 vs. heavier bullets. My 2 cents worth is use the VMax for varmints.

As to a rebarrel, I can’t find any other suitable cartridge with the same bolt head dimensions, plus a rebarrel job could be costly. Maybe I am overlooking something. Personally I would find an accurate load for the rifle you have and call it good. Or, if you are definitely wanting another cartridge then maybe trade your rifle to something more suitable, like maybe a .243 to use mainly for coyotes, but also for hogs and deer.

I shoot 110gr Varmegeddons in my .308 on hogs without any issues. Heck, I use 87gr VMax out of the .243 on hogs when I only have a pair or single on camera that I’m going after. Hogs for the most part aren’t that difficult to kill. Head, neck, and shoulder shots have dropped everyone I’ve shot. I’ll shoot them back some if I need a squeal out of them or them to run a certain way.

A quick Google search said the 224 Valkrie uses the same bolt face as the 6.8 SPC. Other than that your gonna need a new bolt to match the cartridge you change it to. Might be more cost effective to either keep your rifle or sell it and start from scratch.

224 Valkyrie would be the easiest coyote appropriate round for that one, but personally I wouldn’t go with that as it’s a dying round. Either sell that rifle and buy something else or keep it and buy something in the caliber of your choice. If the whole point is because you really want to build a “custom” gun You could get that bolt face opened up and a new m16 extractor installed, but by the time you’re done with all that you might as well buy a
new action. The weatherby 307 action looks interesting for the price, and they went with a Remington 700 footprint so it’s easy to find everything else you need.

Yes the 307 is nice I have factory 22 CM was thinking about an ARC but wouldn’t feed in a 700. Was thinking of a DTI cartridge but they seem to be gone now. I use a custom 700 Remington in 22 CM the most.

A good gunsmith shouldn't have any trouble opening the boltface and installing a 473 extractor or a Sako extractor and open up a world of cartridges dge to rebarrel to.

I would hate to see such a rare rifle turned into something common. I wonder if the mag box would feed the larger rounds? 22 DTI in a bolt gun would be cool.
