Almost got a yote couple days ago

Second day of the nighttime coyote season a couple nights ago, Was up on my deck using distressed cottontail rabbit sounds on the foxpro, see one running in and position it's body behind the tree and stare at my foxpro at about 30 yards

I put my cross hairs on its head since that's all I could see and attempted a headshot

MISS

Zeroed my thermal pretty good the other day and the shot felt good honestly, I'm starting to think that little .223 round might of hit a branch and deflected since this cheap thermal doesn't pick up every branch.

Thank God I got my first yote last season after struggling for months otherwise I'd be in shambles right now. Planning on not calling them into that specific area anymore since there's too many branches.

Oh well, still 3 months left!!

Almost is better than I have been doing lately. It’s been very slow this season.
I am far from an expert and have only killed one coyote but I have encountered them around 10 times here in the northeast, it seems like whenever I put the Minnesota trapline Canine Force scent all over the tree branches around my house they usually come in the next stand. The problem with my house is there's so many darn trees around and they're hard to shoot in the thick stuff but I swear I think it helps to just plaster that canine force all over the trees

I have a similar situation where using the call has them coming in quick and only 25 yards to the woods edge.
This is my new plan. I am going to pick a clear spot where it puts them about 50-70 yards out. Take a post hole digger and dig a hole at an angle that has them broadside to me to dig in it. I plan to bury a couple chicken thighs in it about 12" deep. I put my scope on standby watching it on a tablet with the app. I can be on the gun in 20 seconds slipping out the back door.

Good idea!! I'm going to try the same this weekend.

I think the 223 does get deflected some. I prefer 30cal heavier stuff. But their heads are pretty small, missed one head shot a month ago, 150 yds. Got a broadside hit that did the job. I set up a monitor on the feeder but no animals yet to test it.
