It's been so long since I've called in & shot anything, I felt like a newbie last night.
I went to a spot I hadn't hunted yet this year, over looking a picked bean field next to the woods, facing east, wind from my left.
I set the caller out about 75 yards, & fired up a few howls, then into the bunny blues. Soon, I had a varmint responding down in the trees, with barks saying "I know something's up". I switched up to vocals, then he went silent, I switched on pup sounds, & a few minutes later had one coming in. He kept looking towards the woods, & number 2 appeared.
I shut the caller down, then changed to a squeaker to keep them motivated. I concentrated on the lower one, & when he stopped, I dropped him, then moved to the other as he boogied. But Foxbang kicked in, he stopped, & I dropped him on the spot. I quickly swung over to check on #1 to see he had got up & heading for the woods.
When the smoke cleared, I went to shut off the video, & it wasn't on...WTF? Back to my rookie status, I was having trouble pushing the right buttons in the heat of the moment, & I think when I tried to bump the power up, I shut the video off. When I downloaded the video this morning, I had the first 20 seconds, then the video stopped. I did manage to snap one pic of #2 laying in the field. I found #1 right away piled up right at the wood's edge. Strangely, both males.
So....onto set #2.
I called this spot once this year, back on Christmas Eve. I did call in a bobcat, which is off limits. I did take 3 minutes of video of him sitting on his butt at 65 yards.
I set the caller down below me towards the woods, got ready, then turned it on. It took maybe 10-12 minutes, & I had one step into the field & head my way towards the caller.
This is where you need to fire up the Benny Hill theme song.
I try to turn on the video, but push the menu button instead. So trying to exit out of that, I turn on the rangefinder instead. I somehow managed to exit the menu, and get the video rolling. By then, Mr Coyote is almost to the caller, which under normal circumstances is generally muted, or changed to squeaks. I then expertly put the crosshair off to the side of him & miss a gimme at 50-60 yards, followed up by two more to convince him he's not welcome here.
I've got video, good thing most don't watch them, so no point in posting it.
