Savage Impulse Predator

I was advised on another forum that JARD offers a replacement trigger for Savage Impulse rifles, so I bought one and it's a great alternative to those that don't like the Accutrigger.
I've had no issues with my Impulse rifle Accutriggers, but I got's to know !
You can get it in three different pull weights.
( JARD Impulse )
Hopefully some stock manufacturers will take note and come out with some offerings for Impulse owners in the future too.

Which pull weight did you go with? And what other impressions do you have of it?
I don't mind accutriggers either, but there was one time I went from cold to warm to cold again and something froze up. Almost cost me a double. Yes, ultimately my fault, but still put a little bit of doubt in the back of my head...

I went with the heaviest pull weight (28-32 oz ) to mimic the pull weight of the Accutrigger I've been using for the last three years.
The JARD trigger is flatter, thinner and tapered.
My preferred pull weight is 2lbs for a hunting rifle, but it's close at 1-3/4 lb and because the trigger is flatter it leaves more room in the trigger guard for when using gloves.
It passed the drop test too.
The only con I've found after using it is that it doesn't have a red indicator when in the fire position like the Accutrigger.
Not really a big deal for me as I mostly use it at night, but I did notice that while using it during the daylight hours at the range.
Haven't used it in the field yet and it's 85 degrees here now so I won't find out how it performs in the cold for at least five months.
I haven't heard anything about JARD triggers having issues in the cold, so it shouldn't be a concern.

While painting my newest Impulse stock I decided to do a little testing with the interchangeable parts of my Impulse predators as the barreled action was out of the stock.
I wanted to know that if for some reason that both of my rifles failed could I make one functional rifle with the parts of both.
I removed the carbon fiber barrels and Boyd stocks, then mounted them in the factory stocks with the factory .243 spiral fluted and a heavy 20-250 barrel assy's.
Mounted the day scopes and loaded 50 rounds of untested mild factory seconds ammo for each of them.
I zip tied the rifle parts so I could identify what I swapped during the test.

Impulse test.jpg

Sighted both rifles in at 50 yards and proceeded with the 5 round test's.
I didn't use a torque wrench, just a 1/8" T- handle wrench because I don't carry a torque wrench in the field.
Test ;
#1 - Bolt swap- No discernable difference in accuracy or function - No tools needed
#2 - Bolt heads - No difference as above - No tools needed, Bolt heads are serial numbered.
#3 - Bolt handles - No difference - No tools needed - Swapped from left to right and vice versa
#4 - Barrel and bolt swap/ disassembly and assembly - POI was different as expected, but POI stayed the same after disassembly/reassembly
#5 - Reassemble to original configuration - POI 1/2" off left with the .243, but the 20-250 was dead nuts.
I didn't swap scopes because I didn't want to add the scope mounts into the equation.
I have two magazines adjusted for the 20-250 cartridge, but did swap magazines during the first test and had no issues as long as I took it easy closing the bolt.
The new Jard trigger is a great addition.
I did have to adjust the Jard safety after I got back home, as the safety lever worked, but it didn't go into the full safety position part of the way through the test.
I actually read the instructions and had it fully functioning in under five minutes.
I didn't have any issues with either rifle functioning during the tests.
Confirming to me that the Impulse Predator rifle platform is good to go with part interchangeability.

Here are my 2025 Impulse rifles ready to have thermal scopes mounted and sighted in.
Decided on a grey/black tiger stripe pattern for the 20-250's new Boyd Pro Varmint stock with Adj cheek piece.
Both weigh in at 9 lbs.
Still waiting for a stock manufacturer to come out with a carbon fiber stock to lighten the load.

I hear a lot about Savage rifles being accurate, but not reliable.
Savage responded with the introduction of the Impulse Predator rifle.
Large extractor
Fixed ejector.
Uses AICS magazines for round feeding reliability.
Straight pull ambi bolt that you don't need to worry about bolt/scope clearance.
While it isn't a balanced rifle in factory form, you can add a CF barrel to cut a couple of pounds and make it a well balanced/ lighter varmint rifle.
QC barrel system makes it an awesome switch barrel rifle platform that retains zero.
Slick feeding, positive extraction and ejection.
I'll let the video do the talking.

Where did you get all the different barrels for the gun

I have a bunch of Savage rifles. Two of them (both short action model 12) I built, 22-250 and 243 are in accofit accustocks with bottom metal for AICS magazines. I use Magpul 308 for both. I have 5 and 10 round. They function flawlessly, And they don't cost a small fortune.
I see a lot of talk about MDT magazines in these threads with feeding problems. I would start diagnosing any failure to pick up a round with magazine height which is directly linked to the depth of the bottom metal in the stock. The bottom metal may be to shallow/deep requiring some spacers or in letting etc. In addition it could be an angle issue, like to low in the front/rear. But before I did a lot of modifications I would spend $40 on a Magpul 308 magazine.

I enjoy tinkering and enjoy figuring out issues.

I have more Savage small shank barrels than you can shake a stick at and I had a machinist friend make barrel extensions, squared barrel nuts and recoil lugs for me to be able to swap them.
The sky's the limit as long as the barrel is chambered for a cartridge that has the same rim diameter as the bolt head, which would be .473" in any Predator rifle.
Takes me just over a minute to change a barrel with a QC kit.

Here's a pic of my newest addition, the Impulse Elite Predator.
I wanted a chassis system and the only way to get one was to buy an Impulse Elite Precision rifle as MDT has a proprietary contract with Savage so they can't sell the stock to the public.
It's not a walking varmint rifle by any means, as it weighs 11.5 lbs in it's current form with a day scope on it for load testing.
Going to be a lot heavier with the S60R on top, but if it shoots great I'll suffer carrying it around the rest of the NY Predator season and do some chassis chopping to make it lighter after the season ends.

@shoots100 did you see the new "Core" models?

The new stock looks like exactly what a predator hunter would want: vertical-ish grip, integrated ARCA, AICS mags, etc.
And they're making it in a 20" 22 Creedmoor.
So, it's basically the rifle I built off of the original Impulse Predator.
If they were smart, they'd offer that stock separately, but they wont...

I like the stock, but I'm sure Savage signed another proprietary contract with MDT.
The 110 model stocks come in different camo patterns and even a wood core stock that looks better than the grey or green stock.
This time Savage got it right and had all the 110 + Impulse rifle models adapted to use AICS magazines.
I really don't know why they don't offer it in a .223, as it would open the rifle to more shooters and wildcatting.

I didn't even look close enough to notice Accustock V2 has quick adjustable LOP and comb height instead of the goofy set of cheek pieces and spacers you had to swap out on the V1.
That was going to be my one complaint, but now I got nothing...
Obviously, I haven't laid my hands on one yet, but man, on paper they knocked this out of the park.

I saw an early video of the stock and the guy didn't even take the time to know how to adjust the stock properly.
I have four Predators now and with the cost of the new V2 stocked Impulse it'll be awhile before I add one to the stable.
I do like the pro hunter camo pattern.
