First of all, this site is amazing! If you can’t kill a coyote after reading through these posts throughout the entire site you might as well hang it up and find another hobby.
This weekend while we were riding around I found a set of coyote tracks. So after resetting traps from this mornings catch at another property, I decided to go feed a stand before it got dark. Thankfully I grabbed the Go Wild.
After feeding I checked the wind and thought, what the heck, I’m here and I know just the spot to try and call from.
I had a decent crosswind which should give me a downwind shot if needed on one particular field next to one of our main roads. I knew there was a feed trail on the other side so that’s where I went.
I set up the tripod and went and put the caller out about 75yds or so. I was thinking if they did get downwind of the caller I’d be able to get a shot before they smelled me.
I started off with a rabbit distress and let it play 3-4 minutes while varying the volume up and down. Nothing showed so I went silent for about 5 minutes or so. I went to single howls next for a few. Then silence again. Tried pair howls after that, then silence. I went back to a female lovesick howl and after a 15-30sec break went immediately into a fight. I let that play for a couple of minutes and back to silence.
Nothing had showed so I was about to call it and remembered reading somewhere on here that someone had went back to prey distress before calling it…so I picked another rabbit sound and let it rip.
I was scanning and saw a flash of white and immediately got on the gun. The “white” I saw in the scanner was due North and looked like it was heading SW. The next time I see something it’s about even with my caller but a way West. I have what started out as a NE wind, but it was gradually swapping to East. The next thing I see is a head and ears.
Now here’s where more experienced hunters would’ve probably pulled the trigger. But I’ve watched what I thought was a coyote head and ears only to realize it was a bedded deer! Real easy to tell the difference when they stand up, lol.
The video starts with the coyote in sight, but me playing it safe, holds off on the shot. I wanted a “no doubt” confirmation it was in fact a coyote. Plus I’m guilty of “they’ll get closer”. I’ll be honest, I don’t know why but I thought there was 2 coyotes after the first sighting it sort of disappears. But afterwards I realized there was only one. When I saw it I had lowered the volume to hopefully bring it out in the field.
As you can see, ole boy either caught a whiff of me or the caller and decided he would back on out. Once I realized the gig was up I did a loud squeak with my mouth even though at the time I thought there’s no way he could hear it, yet he did, lol.
I heard the thump of the bullet and saw him spin and I thought fall right there. I immediately went back to a fight on the call and in my mind started scanning for the “other” coyote. I played the fight a few minutes and then went silent. I thought about staying put, but that was enough excitement for one day, lol.
Here’s where things got interesting. I had a video to know exactly where to go, but what you can’t tell is distance. I started walking and realized the feed trail was what he was on and it was a lot farther than I thought. I knew he was between the two smaller pines with the larger pine sorta dead center, but he wasn’t there. Panic mode!! I couldn’t find blood so I got off on a the side trail looking for blood and nothing! I found a stump the gave me a little bit of elevation and was scanning when I spotted “white” in the scanner. It turns out my coyote was in fact on the feed trail, just about 50-60yds farther than what I thought. He did bleed and had spun off in the brush next to the feed trail.
I know that was a long read, but wanted everyone to feel it, lol. The sequences, the waiting between sequences, and even taking the shot given was all from reading or watching y’all’s videos. So thanks to everyone!!
And got to throw in a Bog pic for the haters, lol. I’m just cheap!!
