Coyotes adapting ?????

I wanted to throw this idea or thought out there and see if anyone is experiencing or seeing coyotes behavior change with night hunting. Maybe im crazy but it sure does seem like every tom dick and Harry is getting a thermal and calling coyotes at night . Its not for me but I understand why people like it alot. Anyway has anyone noticed if coyotes are starting to hunt more during day light hours cause of the influx of pressure on them . Just curious 🤔

Can’t comment on that situation directly, as we can’t enjoy the action when the sun goes down up here.

I do however, firmly believe that coyotes are only one genetic mutation away from supplanting us as the dominant species on the planet. So it would surprise me very little if they are adapting to something. They are masters of it.

The coyotes have been hard to come by here. The thermal guys are cleaning them up. Driving around with thermal scanners mounted to their windows

If you think coyotes can become me pressured to the point they are difficult to take during the day. Then they will eventually do th same at night. You are only diminishing one of their senses by hunting at night.

I think you can take night time and daytime out of the equation and just say hunting. The reason I say this is because they can get educated no matter which times you choose to hunt them. For us @NiteHowlHunting we call them and hunt them the same way we would do during the daytime. I understand what you are saying about these folks that just do a lot of scanning at night and don’t get out of the truck until they see one which I believe is how a lot of these folks kill so may in tournaments. Which if they are doing it legally then more power to them. That’s not how we choose to hunt but to each its own. I will say we try not to over hunt our properties we rotate and if we do call them in we do our very best to harvest them a dead coyote is no longer an educated coyote. For those with a limited spots and land I would stress not to over hunt and call it . I would compare it to deer hunting it’s illegal to hunt deer at night and deer have always been hunted during daylight hours it doesn’t keep them from moving during the day even though just like yotes they are also primarily nocturnal animals. Thermal hunting has gotten huge but at the same time there will always be plenty of coyotes to be hunted daytime or night time and wouldn’t stress over it to much. It s a me like everybody is doing it but that’s because we follow and see all the videos and surround our selves with it on a daily basis but in the grand scheme of things there is a lot more hunters out there that don’t hunt predators. I just hope everyone gets out and enjoys the chase day or night and has successful hunts that make memories for a lifetime. Happy Hunting Friends !!!!!

Everyone is going to defend their craft or method of hunting. What I can say is I am not seeing anywhere near the number of coyotes now as compared to what I have the last 5 years before thermal hunting has become so popular.

I do believe thermal has its place and I by no means am I against it. But I do believe it has affected the hunting during the daytime.

There are so many factors that contribute to a change in an animal's behavior that it's hard to pinpoint one thing to cause a shift in it's time to prowl, but the plethora of night hunting equipment and the increase in night hunting pressure has definitely added to their anxiety and made them more careful.

I sure do agree that every Tom, Dick and Harry has thermal equipment and a fox pro. The night calling pressure is intense parts of Ks where I do some calling. Night calling became legal 5-6 years ago in Ks. Early on, it was common to be out calling and see someone scanning with a red light, and/or hearing Lightning Jack. But the lights have been stored and thermals are what virtually all the callers that I know use these days.
The only adaptation that I’m seeing is coyotes are getting very call shy.

Could it be your area just doesn’t have the numbers because of all hunting?
The properties I’m on used to have packs of coyotes. It was nothing to find tracks/scat on every bare dirt spot on the two tracks and hear them sounding off during the evenings or early mornings. I had one landowner that told me they used to wake him up in the mornings. Through trapping/thermal hunting they haven’t heard a coyote in years. Granted I’ve been in these properties for about 5-8yrs now and have taken a pile off them. I’m not saying there aren’t any coyotes on them, but their numbers have been greatly reduced to the point of you’re going to make a LOT of blank stands before killing one. I don’t even go call unless I find a set of tracks or a landowner gets one on one of their trail cameras.

this phenomenon appears to be extremely wide spread this season. areas we know that have coyotes seem like they are extinct and have never been there. the type of weather doesnt seem to matter either.

here in PA the season is open all year, we hunt them all year. we have a huge amount of properties that we are allowed to predator hunt, doesnt matter where we are, its harder this year for some reason.

If folks wish to hunt they need to manage the resource.

No night hunting here. Lower populations relative to other areas due to less food sources.

Less folks snaring/trapping here too as the pelts are worth less.

It will sort itself out most likely, if there aren’t enough to hunt those folks will find a new hobby.

NY state has had a six month season since 1976. Say that six times fast !
That's when coyote were classified as a furbearing species.
So while the tree huggers thought they were saving the coyote, they actually made coyote hunting perpetual.

I would add to my comments above, that lots of the guys that I know have started using thermalsnever hunted coyotes during the day time. They just heard/read how effective thermals were so they had to try it. These guys are very inexperienced coyote callers and are educating lots of coyotes.

When I first got a thermal scope, I was the only one around. It was awesome, I was seeing coyotes and killing them. I too had permission on multiple farms, sole permission.

Now, multiple thermal guys out there, hunting the same properties I hunt. Hunting places with the wrong wind.

It sucks. Lucky to see a coyote now.

Hunting places with the wrong wind.
I pretty much refuse to call coyotes when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. At least 80% of the time around here the wind direction is pretty reliable in the mountains and hills that I get to call coyotes in. On flat ground is is much easier to keep the wind direction in my favor.

Our coyote population is not steady from year to year and I get to call coyotes on private property most of the time. So I can't blame hunting pressure on the years that coyote calling is not very good. I have way better results of calling in coyotes that are only 8 months to 1 year old than I do calling in 2 year old and older coyotes.

It is illegal to call coyotes at night in the area I live and hunt in so I can't blame the tough coyote calling that I have at times on other coyote hunters.

Hypothetically? If your ranches you hunted allowed another person to hunt and they hunted only nights . Would you bother calling in the places you do again ?
