Baiting

I had some pictures of a coyote hitting the bait pile on Thursday night, but he didn't return on Friday night. Last night he came in right at 12, and the 50 gr. V-max gave him a Bon Voyage. That was number 2 out of 3 that I had in one camera frame so I don't know if the 3rd one will make a return. Here is the video.

Once in a while they come buy, been a week and a half since anything was added.

I watched the SB and Turning Point half time then headed out to a bait that had a good wind direction (and coyotes). Got in the blind about 11pm. About midnight coyote started talking 3/4 mile upwind of me. Pretty good breeze so I waited until they finished. Got the ecaller set to female coyote barks/howls(that time of year). Played 10-15 seconds followed by 2 challenge howls at mid volume pointing the speaker where I heard the small group. 10 minutes later I saw something moving like a coyote in that direction (1/2 mile). It stopped for several minutes, I male challenge howled 2 more times. Watched for several minutes and then pulled the rifle in and closed up the window. Checking every 10 minutes with scanner. About 1:15 am scanning revealed a coyote in the field near the bait, appeared to be trying to chew something. Slowly opened window, setup tripod/rifle and made a drt shot. Several times in the next 2.5 hours coyote directly behind me(north and downwind) vocalized. They were close the east/west trees are only about 50-60 yards wide. Eventually the 2 or 3 moved east, didn't ever see them. Sounded like a male and one or two pups. About 4:30 I called it for the night, went and retrieved the female/mangy coyote. She was in heat, the male will be a tough one to get a shot at. Willing to leave her go to the bait alone.

Decent weather last night(mid twenties 3-7 mph NW wind) so I headed to a pop-up blind about 8pm. Had a coyote pic the night before at 10:30 pm.
At 10:04 camera triggered, got on the rifle saw a raccoon wander pass the bait. At 10:15 camera fired again. I turned on the scope and saw the coyote, it walked past the location of the bait( I thought it was still in front of the camera) and a 2nd coyote appeared on a large snow drift behind the first coyote. I thought this is a drive by visit, so I got on the close one, hoping it would stop. It did, I took the shot drt. The 52 gr Amax has much better terminal performance out of the 1/12 twist 223 than my 1/8. Female in heat(near the end I believe) she had mange/lice badly rubbed. Thought a couple night shots tell a better story. She was actually standing next to what was left of the deer which had been dragged away from the camera view.

tipped him over and nary a twitch-just wonderin if you make the Mrs. mad when you shoot that late :ROFLMAO:

Last night I stayed until 1 am, it's been my experience 1/2-2hrs is the window for any coyote that were with the shot one to return. Windy nights seem more likely, I believe because more difficult for coyote to hear each other(track location). They can make some very subtle sounds as they move about, searching, trying to flush prey for one another.

Mike, it used to and I tried limiting it to 11 P.M., but when I went suppressed that changed it. Lots of times I tell her next morning that I've got to carry the coyote off and she has no clue that I even shot. She is usually in bed by 10 and I generally don't turn in until about 12.

I finally had a visitor to my bait pile last night a little after midnight. Snow's pretty crunchy up here in MI, and with a SW wind tonight, I think my chances are better to just sit in my blind rather than going out calling. Typically I'd wait for some consistent visits, but I just don't have spots that set up well with a SW wind so I'm gonna give it a go tonight in the blind watching the bait. I'll post up if the coyote Gods were on my side!🤞

A good suppressor makes a big difference. My father lives with me, we live out in country so I do all my zeroing and tinkering/shooting in the back yard. I'll come in toting my rifle(s) and he will say "I thought you were going to shoot some"? I usually reply something like "I shot at least 15 times". That's usually followed by "I didn't hear you shoot once".

You're absolutely correct DLR. I was telling 6mm06 just the other day that once you go suppressed, you don't even want to shoot anything else. So, you either have "safe queens" or start getting everything threaded and you don't even consider buying something that isn't already threaded.

Yup. I won't buy a rifle now unless it's threaded and I have plans to have at least 3 of my old ones threaded. I'm waiting on my 2nd Enticer to come in now.
