Off work early = afternoon double

Not much of a write up to be done for this one. Knew we would be done work early yesterday. I was hoping by 09:00 but, never got home until just after 12:00 and on the road by 12:30. Went to a spot that’s a regular in the rotation but I haven’t been able to hit for better than 3 weeks now. Where I was setting up yesterday, I have a love hate with the spot. I works but, anything that comes is sub 150 yards before you can see it at all and if you mess anything up, not much opportunity to recover.

We finally have some fresh snow and the walking is actually pretty quiet. Wind dictated I use this hide vs a few others I have used on this ground. Caller 25 yards away. After a few howls, I saw a coyote moving in the edge of the trees and then disappear behind cover. I knew just how it would approach so, I readied the shotgun and waited for it to show again. As I saw pointy ears above the snow bank, I gave some mouse squeaks. The coyote stopped briefly and then closed as rapidly as it could. Only feet from the caller, I delivered the 4 Buck payload. Got on the pup screams for 30 seconds and hunkered down again. After a few minutes of silence, I blasted some rabbit for a short burst. A few minutes later, I caught movement and saw another coyote come into view. I had to get my rifle moved about 60 degrees and took a while as the coyote just stood there looking. Upon getting it turned, I couldn’t get my head in position on the stock. Staring through the tiny hole with my head being so far back, I found the coyote and the trigger collapsed. BOOM! CHOP! And that, was that. 120 yard shot and not so much as a tail wag after impact.

Very different color on those compared to what we have here.(y)
We get a pretty diverse offering of colours where I’m at. Not a pile of the really pale ones. Where I do most of my calling, more lighter colours on the whole though. Then just 25 miles west where my place is, way more wooded and overall, the coyotes are much darker in colour. Up north where I hunt deer in the big bush, they are super dark.
