Baiting

Last night I decided to stay at the shack again though I hadn't originally planned to. Glad I did. Shortly after 0400 this morning another coyote showed up unexpectedly. Once again the new OneLeaf thermal and Grendel did a great job, dropping him where he stood. This male has more white hair on him than any I have ever seen.

Thanks, HM. That was a very pretty and unusual colored one. With a little luck maybe more will move in before I call it quits for the season. Even though I can hunt them year round, I set my own season of August through March.

Thanks, CT. Yes, the pistol is a S&W Model 66 stainless .357. It is the first generation "66", no dashes. I purchased that one way back in 1977 to carry in security work. It's a 4" and is a great pistol, accurate. I used to handload a lot for it since I did a lot of shooting back then. Nowadays I just carry factory 158 gr. Federal Hydra-Shok's just in case I need to defend against a bear. Haven't had any issues with black bears, but they are around, and last year a friend was attacked by one here in my county. He required multiple stitches, so I carry it just in case. I have a Model 29 .44 Mag which is better bear medicine, but it has a 6" barrel and a little cumbersome to carry.

Thanks, Spot. Eleven is a lot. Man, it's been slow here this year, though it has picked up slightly. I hate dealing with mud. Would much rather have snow than mud.

Wishing you well, Week. I am back at the shack tonight again, hoping. Haven’t seen another one since that last kill but it’s either be here or sitting at home.

My Tactacam had recorded a coyote hitting the bait pile on Friday night between 4:30-5:30. Since it had spent close to an hour at the bait pile I was hoping for an early return last night. Sure enough, about 9:15 the alarms went off two or three times in succession so I figured it was the coyote being jumpy as they usually are. I eased open the office window and shot her at 95 yds. She hit the ditch right beside her and I had to pull her out today. Here is a picture of her on the bait pile Friday night.

And here is the video of her demise.

Spot, you're right. I've only had one roadkill deer carcass to put out this winter and it is long since gone. I only managed one kill off it though. Weather is too warm now for a deer pile here even if I had one. Remember though, these are Southern Coyotes and they like fried chicken scraps compliments of friendly restaurant owner. :)

Thanks guys and Mike, the action is still a bit stiff and the trigger is not as light as I would prefer, but it does put bullets into tiny groups.

Good job, DoubleUp. Those Ruger Gen 2’s are good looking ones. Would be nice if Ruger refined them a bit. Regardless, accuracy is the word.
