New rifle or rebarrel an old one?

Alright, I'm ready to jump on the 22 cm wagon. My dilemma is should I re barrel my tikka 22-250 varmint special with a proof carbon fiber or just buy a new rifle? The ruger american looks good as well as the Savage 110. I'm torn and going back and forth. I'm new here and hope to get some valuable opinions. This rifle will be used suppressed and for coyotes.

Round count on the 22-250, how accurate is it(I don't mess with good barrels)? Most smiths will be 4-6 months out on shouldered barrel work. 400-500$ for a quality blank + smith fees.

Thank you for the response. The Tilka is a vault queen, maybe 40-50 rds through it. It shoots ok but nothing earth shattering. The problem is that I have several 22-250s and zero 22 cm. The cost of a proof cf pre fit barrel is within $200 of a new rifle. The Tikka is also a heavy barrel so it's really nose heavy.

I definitely want a good shooter. Just would like opinions on what choice leads to the best out come. Its a crap shoot either way.

I would rebarrel it but not with a proof carbon prefit. I’d get a sporter contour barrel and get a good smith to chamber and install it for you. I hate swinging a Tikka Varmint on a coyote.

You're rolling the dice with a Proof wrapped barrel. There is a significant percentage of those barrels that have bore dimensional issues or internal stresses that will make the point of impact walk all over the target when it warms up. Some of them shoot fine......but a lot of them don't.

I would spend less money and buy a sporter barrel Tikka, 1-8" twist, 22-250. I have one, and it will shoot anything from 40-62 gr bullets, haven't tried anything heavier. I'm using the 62 gr VT for coyotes, and it's working great in my gun. My gun with Pulsar thermal and suppressor weighs just over 10 lbs.

I've done it! I ordered a barrel from preferred barrel in utah. 20 in (I shoot suppressed) 7.5 tw stainless. Sent them my barreled action and the new rig will be here in a couple days. I'll update when I get some rounds down range.

I have a hard time believing a Tikka varmint just shoots OK. Most I've owned or seen were very accurate with a good load and a good shooter. Other than shooting heavy bullets I don't see a need for a 22 CM.

Surprised to hear your Tikka shoots okay but nothing spectacular. I have shot several but only own one and it shoots 1/2 MOA or better. I have never heard of a average shooting Tikka. That being said, I understand what you are saying about a heavy barrel. My Tikka is a Super Lite which means it is a smaller diameter barrel that is also fluted. It is a dream to carry compared to my Remington 700 VSSF 220 Swift with a 26" heavy fluted barrel. But, sitting idle the 700 is as stable as they get.
Good luck with your new barrel and I hope you are happy with the outcome.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. The tikka is just unused, only fired it a handfull of times. I've got a vault full of 22-250s and wanted something different. As far as the nut behind the butt,im more than capable. I'm a coyote hunter and need to be mobile. At 70 yo that means light. Everyone's different.

Granted, if your doing a lot of walking a Tikka with a varmint barrel is going to get heavy. Trade or sell the Varmint and buy a Super Lite. A deceased friend of mine had the Super Lite in 204 and it was easy to carry and a tack driver.

I have 4 tikka now. The addiction started cuz a bought a 22-250 varmit. Bugger shoots .3 to .5 with factory ammo. So I bought a 6.5cm, 6.5 prc, & 223. All are 1/2 and better. If I wanted a stalking rifle for varmit, the ranahan would be top of my list. Mine shot .3 or .4 before I pulled the barrel to go to a 26" heavy varmit custom from urban rifleman.

I've noticed that as age catches up to us, the rifle weights tend to go down.

I have sold, rebarreled, or fluted several guns & barrels due to hating the final product as I've got older.

Being young & invincible, weights were never really a consideration when you're full of piss & vinegar.

Congrats man! I just jumped on the 22CM wagon myself, haven't even gotten a chance to drop the hammer on a coyote. I rebarreled a 6.5CM Tikka rifle as well with an X-caliber stainless steel prefit with a nut. It shoots really well; hope yours does as well.

Fellows,
Please explain as I have no clue, what's the advantage of the .22 Creedmoor over an 8 twist .22-250?
I really don't know, and what is the parent case of the .22CM?
Thank you.
