What’s on top of your rifle

Hi interested to know what your running on your rifle’s scope wise and why and also any issues you’ve had. Myself I’m running a Swarovski ds gen 2 on my tac A1 I find it a good enough scope in day time on open hill country not so good in grey dark just doesn’t gather light that well. On my Sako .308 I’m running a revic radikill great ballistic solver glass quality mmm not the best again ok for day time plinking. On my t3x super varmint I’ve got a nocpix Rico 75 a very good thermal scope but it’s had a lot of issues the latest being the laser range finder no giving ranges and contradicting ranges so it’s going back to get a new LRF module fitted. Also just wondering do you guys do live stock protection like protecting lambs and calves from predators. Cheers

I am probably in the minority. I run an Aimpoint T2 red dot. I have tried everything - 3x9 scopes, fixed power 3.5x, LPVOs, you name it.

After hunting coyotes for 20 years in the desert, I have found that 95% of my shots are inside of 100 yards. AND, those shots happen fast at odd angles. A red dot gives me the most flexibility to make those shots.

If I were on flat ground in Kansas, maybe a scope would make sense. But, not where I hunt.

May have to get a different scope. Looks like new targets here. 7 foot long lizards. Oh - we already got them in some states.

Didn't do much night hunting. Used Burris FFII Ballistic Plex 3-9 or 4.5-14 for years. As my eyes began to deteriorate, I found the E1 reticle to be much quicker to acquire than the old Ballistic plex and found myself using the 4.5-14 almost exclusively.

Sako Vixen fullstock 222 Rem Leupold 2-7 Compact, it's the only only decent scope that fits in low rings with a wide FOV.

Rem 788 222 Rem Sightron S1 1.75-5x32

Rem 700 20P (20" carbine) Leupold Vx-3 1.75-6x32, I ran a Vx-3 1.5-5x20 on it for a number of years.

Savage 10 22-204 Sightron ll 1.5-6x40

Savage 10 22-250 Balvar 8 2.5-8x? I put this one on for an egg shoot to see if the old girl would keep up with modern scope, made it to the third round and killed a coyote with it on the way back to camp after the shoot and just left it on.

Like Dave3006 I've found that almost all my called preds are close. So for me bold reticles and fast target acquisition trump "X's" everytime. All of my scopes will easily take me to 300 yards on coyotes.

I do keep a HB 223AI around for longer ranges, it's set up for a tripod and wears a Sightron S-tac 3-15x42, it's never been fired at a predator, I just haven't found the stand I would need it on.

My combo guns all wear 1-4x20s of one flavor or another

I hunt almost exclusively public ground across the west and 90% of my stands are new stands rarely hunting the same stand twice.

I'm in the process of building a Savage 10 223 with a suppressed 16" barrel and it will wear a Leupold VariX-3 1.5-5x20 with a German #1 reticle

Daylight hunter, two ARs depending on what I feel like. Both run low power variables, one a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 and the other a surprisingly decent Bushnell Something 1-6 (that I bought before I convinced myself to put up with the overly busy and somewhat ridiculous reticle in the S.E.). I have run 3-9/10 variables and found the bottom a bit too high at times. I also tried an EoTech with 3x magnifier and after a season of use just couldn't get comfortable with it.

Day hunter.

I've got an old Vortex Diamondback, 4x12x40 on the Hornet, a Kahles 3.5x10x50 on the 222RemMag, an older Burris Signature 4x12x44 on a 243, and a Leupold VX 2, 6x18x40 on another 243.

The Hornet is my 'early season, close quarters' rifle, the 222RemMag is the one I grab the most and the 243's come out in the later season or in tougher conditions.

My main calling rifle now wears a Nightforce SHV 3x10-42mm with a standard duplex. The Glass is excellent and more importantly it holds zero perfectly and is extremely tough when it gets beaten around. I love the length of the scope too at only 11”….The only draw back is that it’s a little heavy at 20 ounces….

Im running mostly vortec stuff now. I have encountered 2 issues, but with vortec warranty they always take care of it quick. For thermal im running the iray bolt tx60c. Crazy image quality from that scope.

That was go-to scope before I switched to the lower power (1x) of the Strike Eagle. I loved that scope, but the combination of a bit too much power for close coyotes and the fine crosshairs being hard to see with my aging eyes prompted me to try something new.

Strictly a daytime caller so my 22-250 has a nightforce shv 3-10x42 moar reticle, 243 has a nightforce shv 4-16x56 with the moar only drawback I see is they are both heavy but they take the abuse of being beat around in the ranger during a contest and and never lose zero, and my AR has a Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 with the firedot reticle that I use in the thick cedar tree draws on the windy day
