Got one coming--got some questions

I don't believe you can get a refund on a can and trying to sell a second hand can is a total nightmare. Even if it is unused.

After soaking ..... Just personally. Not a suggestion necessarily but I have a dremal tool and I would put a cutoff disc on it and right were the seam is, I would slowly remove some stock.
First off why would there be a seam or a separation if the barrel is not threaded? Just my analytical thinking.
By removing stock at this area it should show you a thread Or perhaps the relief cut, or the shoulder of the barrel.
If you don't get at least one of the three, then you know it's time to pull the barrel.

Jmeddy once you get your barrel ready be it a false or overtightened thread protector. You might find this interesting.

Now in this I'm using rimfire cans. But the same hold true for centerfire.

I mentioned that I had just gotten a SilencerCo Sparrow to augment (backup /act as loaner if need be) to my OCL Ti 22. I also noted the POI shift with the Ti 22, so today I decided to do a shoot off between the two solely for the sake of accuracy on my Savage MkII with a 16.5" heavy barrel from the factory. Once I started with the evaluation quickly it showed the Ti 22 was indeed more accurate with CCI Std Velocity. So while the Sparrow showed no POI shift, which normally one would assume it to be the best choice. When shot against each other the OCL Ti 22 groups was half the size with the same host and ammo. So the obvious choice was made, the Ti 22 stay on the Savage MK II for the Gopher hunting and target usage. The sparrow is now a backup, and for other hosts such as the Ruger MK III 22/45.

Ohhh I failed to read this part...... Crap Brother wish you lived close to me....
but was told by Ruger today that it IS NOT!!!
Barrel already has almost 400 rounds of Varget rounds through it and the last RAR I had started losing accuracy at just over 750 with Varget down the tube.
Ruger huh? easy solution find a drop in barrel from your barrel maker of choice, all ready chambered and threaded. Just needing to be installed and headspaced, wha-la ready to go to shoot fresh barrel good threads can can screw on. Life is good.
No need to be absolutely embarrassed I promise you I and many on here have done more stupider things in the past that we don't talk about.
The beauty of this option is a fresh barrel rounds count for the new can.

Or simply take it to a smith and have the barrel threaded, they will recrown and cover up all the mistakes. Depending on how far back you tell them to go is how much barrel loss. Freshing the crown will usually help the barrel life a bit, not much but a bit.

Can it be a pain in the Arse? yeah if the seller and the buyer makes it so (provided it's within the same state, and then their is state laws which could complicate it).
OR if out of state at which point it would be a dealer to dealer etc etc then to new customer and each dealer in the two differing state would want a cut of money which most likely the buyer would want the seller to cover.

OR see if I can get a refund on the can.
If the paperwork or e-filing has been submitted IDK your dealer, but I'm venturing a flat no will be the answer. Could you sell it to a individual probably if they are within the state although the paperwork would need to be done by you. Yes it would involve paperwork, a dealer worth his salt would be more than willing to talk you through the process. Would you get your most of your money back IDK, never shot, I would think so in a individual to individual transfer.

The Ruger American is like the savage barrel and nut are about the same although the Ruger uses a smooth nut at the action face (some actually have a hole for spanner wrench, most don't anymore) Think strap wrench for barrel nut removal. The barrel tendon (thread size) is 1" with 16 threads per inch. Once the barrel nut is backed off away from the action the barrel will come loose. Although a barrel wrench will be easiest, but I have seen strap wrenches used (very rarely successful).
Just like the savage (although the barrel tendon is NOT the same size small shank savage is 1.055" with 20 threads per inch IIRC) they remove and install and headspace exactly the same. It's actually easy, usually takes the smith less than 30 minutes for barrel removal if he takes two coffee breaks and goes to the bathroom once.

The other choice is have ruger rebarrel it.....

Although I think the drop in new barrel is the way to go.

Well, I got the approval email last evening so will be driving to Pittsburgh to get it in the next few days-oh, if I just had something to put it on :ROFLMAO:
Well, technically you still have something to put it on, however, the method is still in question....😁😁😁

thinking hard about a RAR Ranch in 243 right now and either keeping the 'compact' as a b/u or selling it (preferably). I dressed the "boogers" up and cold blued and it looks dang good 'if I say so myself'.
If you want to save some money check these out. They are the GEN 1 Ruger Americans and threaded. 20'' barrel though. GunPrime has them for $389 right now.

WELL, NO SENSE BEING A DUMMY WITHOUT PROVING IT OCCASIONALLY!
I might be mistaken but swear when I bought this gun in Mar. '24 the Ruger website said it was threaded. Since that page is "no longer available" I can't prove it or be sure but was told by Ruger today that it IS NOT!!!
So now the decision is to pay to get the boogered end of this threaded or cut off and crowned and sell it then buy another that is suppressor ready. Barrel already has almost 400 rounds of Varget rounds through it and the last RAR I had started losing accuracy at just over 750 with Varget down the tube.
OR see if I can get a refund on the can.
Embarrassed and extremely pi**ed doesn't come close to describing me right now.
Hey Mike, my Ruger American Go Wild Gen 1 in 243 came with a muzzle brake installed and I removed it with very little effort and put on a thread protector 5/8X24.
It became my go to rifle, leaving a Remington 788, a Thompson Center Icon, and a Savage Presentation all in 243, idling in the gun safe.

I cant find a go wild anywhere —that would be my choice at under 6#

Well l took the hour drive North to ā€œBlitzburghā€ and picked it up. Now to get something to put it on. Local shop’s distributors don’t have a Ranch in 243 but l found one and by mid week will prolly have it shipped to the local—possible nuther eye surgery first of the week if it can get scheduled🤬.

If you can't get ahold of a Ranch.... CVA has the Cascade SB in 243. It's 18''.

My dad has a gen 1 350 legend ranch and it's an awesome little rifle. His is actually the youth model which makes it even better for hunting in ground blinds.
