Here's wheat we know about black coyotes.

The black coyote is on my bucket list of yotes to kill. My buddy shot one this winter, calico looking thing. A couple years ago I had a white coyote come into on me bowhunting. Looked down the ridge and saw the "ghost". 1st thought was, whose white dog is this? As it closed the distance and I realized what it was, it was go time. Went full draw on it and it stopped behind a spicebush. Then it went through my lane too quick, no shots fired. Never saw it again.

35 or so years ago, there was three or four black coyotes running around a fairly focussed area. I tried like a bugger to get just one. Came awfully close one day but couldn’t close the deal. A dead cow ended up out on a nearby lake and I’m told they were all ran down and killed off of skidoos. I’ve never even heard tell of another being seen since then.

I've never seen a black coyote.

Closest I've seen was a very dark red colored one, like an Irish Setter. I was about to shoot a coyote when I had the 'Setter' appear in the scope and then I was not 100% certain they were both coyotes, so I hesitated, and they trotted over the hill and were gone.

To be fair, it was very late afternoon, snowing lightly, so pretty low light conditions,. Over the next few years, I ran into coyotes with lot's of red in them in that area, and then that line seems to have disappeared.

Nice pics Bowhunter and Bob!

Bummer. I saw a red from a tree stand in Illinois 20 some yrs ago. It trotted from horizon to horizon along the fence line l was hanging in, passed at about 5 yds.
That was before l hunted them but am still
Amazed how far it went without breaking stride.

And I have to confess, hearing someone say "coyote-ee" that many times in one minute makes my teeth hurt. There's no "eee" sound in Coyote. Okay, maybe black ones are coyote-eees. Around here though, they are ki-otes.

🤣 I've always thought of it like this, you don't say "tote" as tot-ee, it's simply tote as in yote or coyote.

I've killed a few black coyote here in central Florida as well as four that looked like Husky.

The four that are black and tan were killed within two and a half years or so of each other and all within a mile of each other. Three at night, one in the middle of the day.

crazy, they look like husky crosses.

I’ve never seen a black coyote. I’ve killed some rather dark ones, but not black. Prettiest coyote I ever seen here in NY was a beautiful red phase that I had seen during bow season. Like red fox red. I really wanted to bump into that one while calling, but it was not to be. I’ve killed a couple blonds, but the majority are just grayish to tawny colored.

I see a lot of "bleach blondes" in late summer. After they prime up, not very many.
