In desperate need of off-grid vacation

Work has been crazy stressful. I desperately need to leave civilation behind for a week and shoot something.

I want to rent a compact camper trailer and go camp somewhere and shoot something (either coyotes or hogs) in a few weeks.

I live in kansas, where should I escape to for a week? Looking for someplace within a 16ish hour drive.

From there, "hogs" likely means Texas or Oklahoma, both of which are predominantly private land. You'd be unlikely to just show up somewhere and get access to camp and shoot hogs. I suspect you'll need some advance planning and a willingness to part with some Benjamins. For "coyotes" you could hit Colorado or New Mexico and hit the mountains to get out of the heat. Not sure about CO, but here in NM you can hunt coyotes year round and pretty cheap as a non-resident. Get a fishing license and do some trout fishing as well. Depending on where you end up, you might even find a prairie dog or two.

Just a thought.
A self-guided hunt in the Montana River Breaks. Fly into Billings, take a tent, rent a U-Haul truck, and you're set.
There are many "Roads" that are open to drive; you don't NEED a boat and can camp anywhere on BLM land. Most of it is open to hunt coyotes and prairie dogs. JUST be aware of the weather; rain can be a disaster.
Check in to the regs; very few restrictions. Nonresidents have a few items that would need to be addressed.

You make it sound easy... it probably is and thinking otherwise keeps a lot of people from going out and exploring the lands.

I retire this time next year and this is exactly the kind of annual trip I'd like to take. Thanks.

To make your decision MUCH easier, consider shooting squirrels, and going to a state conservation area or national forest. This will help ensure success, and will give you lots of options. Most of these areas have places to camp for FREE. Bring a cheap 1.5-3K generator and you can enjoy AC in that camper as well.

I've made a lot of trips like your contemplating. A trailer will confine you a lot. A canopy with bunk/cot on your P/U with camping gear will open a lot of area. SW is hot now unless your in the mountains. I'd look north, the Missouri River breaks sounds great, National grasslands in the Dakota's, CO or WY mountains are great. Have fun.

Consider something simpler: Squirrel hunting either state conservation areas or national forests.
1. Camping is usually free. Bring a generator and you are good to go with A/C and cooking with your rented compact camper.
2. The hunting action is fun, fast and rewarding.
3. You will spend more time hunting, and less time driving.
4. You may even get a rabbit or two.

Plus, if you have experienced the tens of thousands of dollars damage squirrels have cost us, you would consider them a predator :)

This sounds very interesting, thanks for the suggestion!

Im really starting to lean towards and pdog/coyote trip in and around the shirley mountains in wyoming.
That sounds like a great idea - i was just thinking to myself i want to get away from this dam job too! im saving 2 weeks for deer season and 1 week for christmas but i wanna just take a relaxing backcountry trip somewhere myself with low pressure on hunt success and just get away from it all. ive been thinking lately of just cashing out y 401k early in 6 or so years, paying the house off and working part time so i can do this whenever
