Do it Yourself Suppressor Cover

For those that like saving money or DIY projects, here's what I did for a cheaper DIY suppressor cover.

I ordered these welding blankets from Amazon, $9.99 for two 12"x12" mats.


At the same time, I also ordered a 16 pack of 1" X 5' vet wrap for $6.99:


The mats are easily cut to length with regular scissors, and the 12" width is enough for two laps around a 1 1/2" diameter can. I used the vet wrap in five evenly spaced increments to hold it in place. I found it easier to use a few rubber bands to hold the mat in place first, then finish with the vet wrap.

The only downside I've found, is trying to slide it back on after sliding it off, as the mat can tend to bunch up if you're not careful or have the vet wrap stretched pretty tight. No biggie, as you can generally reuse the vet wrap, or the 16 rolls will last quite a while.

Alf, I did something very similar with the same mat. Instead of vet wrap I used camo wrap and than para cord to finish it off. In all it took about 30 minutes to make and about $15 in material.

That'll work too.

Once I found out it could be a struggle taking it on & off, I ended up ordering another Cole-Tac instead.

I was heading out for prairie dogs, & knew I would want to take the covers off to speed up cooling, so I didn't want to be farting around refitting it all the time. As it turned out, with the constant breeze on the prairie, I ran the cans bare the majority of the time.

I will be using one of the mats this fall on my Nomd Ti, as I don't have a cover for it.
 
Google welding shield for hand. It will bring you to Amazon or some welding supplies outfits.
Use the Aluminum side against the can. Fatter cans take 2 of them. Most come with leather on the opposite side.
You can wrap with camo tape, or other material. Kevlar is best but then you are running the price up for a DIY. But this heat shield won't let Para cord melt. A mag dump or two on a sounder of hogs, you will appreciate this. I used Velcro from Hobby Lobby you can glue the Velcro onto leather. Then use Para cord if wanted or needed
These will slide on and off.
The shields 6-8 dollar ones work fine.
Once you see a pic of the hand heat shield this will make more sense.
 
I will have to wrap mine with leather. after the paracord cooked off, I removed it thinking now I'm going to burn myself. After the next mag I slung the gun not thinking and burned my calf LOL. :rolleyes:

Thanks Alf, I have been looking for a cover to fit this Sonicore (1.77" dia.) and no luck except the Weka silicone, which I was gonna get then seen this post. Don't know if I really need one cause when sighting in, I never got any "halo" in the scope, but then again, it was in the 90s not single digits. ;)

Mike, I've never used, or saw the need, for a cover for nighttime thermal use. But then I don't call in a hundred a night like Jeremy does.😁

Even shooting prairie dogs I didn't use a cover, the nonstop wind kept the mirage at bay, & the cans cooled down faster w/o.

Buddy bought the Weka to try, OK for light use, but not good for dogging.

I'm in need of a couple covers myself. Considering Cole-Tac as I have other products from them. I like what they stand for as a Made in America pride company !

Well Al, now ya tell me I don't need one :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: . I guess I could send that stuff I ordered last night back or maybe Suz can cancel it as soon as I get off here. I had my doubts of the need but seems like all pics on here have them covered.
Anyhow, keep your tips coming--I still see no need for anything better than the Leofoto.

Tim,
Cole-Tac was always one of the 1st mentioned when guys ask about covers, so I didn't bother shopping when I needed one last year. Lucked out that they had a 10% off at the time too, unfortunately no discount the next go around. Oh well....

I think alot of that is monkey see, monkey do kinda thing. I've yet to see the need for a cover for a hunting gun when hunting.

The Weka is a cheaper alternative, but the welding mat is a third or so of that.

I agree on the Leofoto, it fits perfectly in the quality vs price category.

I was hoping for a July 4 sale, didn't see one. I'd better get one on order soon. Don't need my first burn during a range day.
 
I can't remember which holiday they had the discount I used the 1st time. The 2nd, I needed it for PD's so I couldn't wait.

I think the Corset is the only one suitable for heavy use, that's what mine are.

The 1 1/2" x 8" only weighs 1 1/2 ozs, so hardly a burden.
 
I bought the welding blankets, wrapped them around my suppressors for size then gorilla glued Velcro on opposing sides so when wrapped around they grab. Easy peasy, not gonna hunt with them but works for not getting burned at the range.
