55 gr for 243 win.

Hello, kinda new here. I was wondering if anyone has ran the sierra VMK 55 gr in there 243 win for coyote hunting? If so how did they preform? I just loaded up some but our season for coyotes doesn't open until Oct. Hopefully there DRT

I’ve shot the 243 55gr Nosler B-Tips for years and years right around 3700fps. They work great on Coyotes.
Thanks for the reply. What about a shoulder hit? Last yr i was using 70 gr varmageddon in a different 243 win with good results. That was AR platform. Im gonna try running a bolt gun this yr is the reason for the switch and I get better grouping. Im hoping it will drop them with a shoulder hit still

I always aim for the shoulder and if Im feeling it I’ll shoot em in the head.

I prefer a bolt gun myself for a couple reasons.

I always aim for the shoulder too . I was just curious how a 55 would do on bone. Thanks for the response. Im gonna give it a whirl this season

Nosler btips have a heavier base than say, a vmax. I do not have any experience with sierras. There was a post on here at one point showing cross sections of those bullets. I run 55gr btips and won't be switching any time soon.

Is the Tipped Varmint King just a rebranding of the Blitz King? If so, the 55gr Sierra will do fine hitting them on the shoulder or anywhere on the body.

I ran 58vmax for yrs and am trying 55 NBTs now. Only a small sampling of 6, 3 were frontal DRT,1 was a spine so doesn't count, but 2 were double lung pass-thrus that ran 50ish yds. Verdict is still out. I am running them kinda slow at about 3200 but all were inside 120yds and are on video in the 'calling in the east' sub forum.

Good to know, thank you

Yes they re named them to the varmint king. My first experience with them. Im semi new to reloading as well, but has been going pretty good. Thought id give the 55 a try for the speed .

I’m running factory Winchester Silvertips loaded with 55gr NBT’s from a Tikka 8 twist barrel. Never chronographed them but advertised north of 4000 fps. They shoot phenomenal and I’ve yet to have an exit and they have been devastating on the relatively low count of coyotes I have killed with them. Literally a dozen give or take. I had less than excellent results with the 58gr vmax Superformance factory ammo. Shot great. Had a few blow up on entry. Still killed but made a huge mess. I think it’s just the NBT’s are able to hold together a bit better on entry. Slower twist and less velocity probably yields better results with the vmax and probably causes pass through with the NBT’s. Just my thoughts.

Video of typical 55gr Blitz King performance from a 243. Stay off the edges if you're saving fur and you'll have a high percentage of entrances with no exits. Likely the most fur friendly 243 bullet on the market.

After that one season, I stopped using the 55gr B-Tips in the 243. I had more runners and floppers with it, even lost one coyote, so I went back to a 75gr Vmax.

I have read from a lot of you guys that the 243, 55gr B-Tip hits like 'the Hammer of Thor', but that's not been my experience. I chalked it up to a 'bad' box of them.

I really like speed, so I'll try them again.
