The month started with Pulsar having my scope for a repair. I got it back on the 7th. Back on the gun and zeroed the next day and soon started hunting. While crossing a fence one night at a board x-ing a x-board came unnailed on one side and I badly wrench my lt. knee. I was basically off it for 4 days and am still in a hard brace when I am gonna be on uneven ground. Lost over a week of no hunting.
Anyhow, I got out 9 nights for a total of 34 sets. Only heard howling (some solicited and some on their own) 5 times! This is normally a very "noisy" time of year but has not been so the last 4yrs now!??
Other than the 3 in these vids, I have only seen 1 other and I also MISSED IT
Aug 24th at about 160-70yds but didn't hit record. That particular coyote howled from the bottom I had just drove through to get to the ridge I am now on when I was at the suv. I am hunting a valve set access road that cuts through woods and shot opportunities will be quick, which it was. It never howled during my set but showed up to a 'denraid' sound at about 25minutes.
Now, on to the Aug. 28 vids. First segment is through my scanner as my young buddy is teaching me how to miss--I learned well as after dropping him at home I did just that--twice!!
WE were in a horse pasture set in the shadow of a bale feeder but our shoulders and heads where being backlit by the moon. This coyote came out of the hollow on the right to pup howls followed by pup distress about 200yds W of us. The call was about 100yds W of us. It was broadside when I tell Marlon, "straight in front of us". I think if must have seen him flip up his scanner or move down into the gun. I could not get it stopped with barks, howls, or kiyis and Marlon 'let one rip'. You can see the dirt fly from the 6.5 right behind it.
Now, to my flubs. This is the second set after dropping him at home. Call is 80 or so to my NE and wind is from the NE. I am tucked into a shadow at a lone maple that sits about 30yds from the woods line. I let out a high-pitched series of 3-4 howls and immediately see this critter running quartering to me about 400yds to my NE. I get out of the scanner and into the gun and it has stopped coming and is going back the way it came! I run some social sounds through the diaphragm which makes it stop. I howl again. No movement. Silence. Now it sits down. Socials again. Still sitting. Just doesn't act like it is gonna come so I get in position and feel real steady so 'touch one off". Well, It runs away after jumpin' straight in the air. I did look for it but did expect to find it. From prior experience I know that the fenceline in the vid is 275-80 from my set.
5 or so min later after some more howls I see another come out of the hollow it ran into but way to my right and uphill. Try as I might to get it to come any closer it doesn't seem like it is going to, so I feel good and shoot. I hear a "meat report" and it kiyi plus it kiyied again after entering the woods. About 250yds. I decide to leave it 2 days and do a buzzard/nose search. NO find!! Plus the farmer mowed the rest of the field and told me he saw no buzzards or sign of it on Sat. SURE HOPE MY SHOOTING IMPROVES
