When you know one is there!

So on the opening evening of the season I called in a pair and managed to kill one of them. Under most circumstances I wouldn’t go back to the same spot right away. But this time it felt different. The one that got away hadn’t seen or smelled me and I had only thrown out two series of calls on a hand blown coaxer. In my head, I felt like this would be a great situation to go in and use coyote vocals to see if I could draw the second one out for a peek. It worked perfectly, and almost instantly!

After chatting with the farmer while he was milking, I told him my plan and he said go get em, and don’t stop at one! 😂

The winds were ESE so I made my way up the extreme W side of the lower west pasture. About halfway up while trying to get to the slight crown to better see south a lone howl erupts from the extreme east side of the lower east pasture. What luck! I got to the crown and hustled my FoxPro X2s caller (didn’t forget it this time) towards the south end about 60 yards and pointed it towards the south. Getting back to my rifle I pointed it SE about halfway from the caller and where I had heard the lone howl. Digging through the menu I decided to use BFA Smooth Talker as my vocal of choice. (BTW, I’ve had very decent success with the BFA sounds off his Moto coyote) I let out about half of the actual call sound and muted. Scanning, approximately 15-20 seconds later I pick up a screaming fast coyote headed SW towards the caller. I get in the gun and woof at it at about 60 yards. Not stopping. Woof louder.. not stopping. At about 120 yards I really hammer out a loud woof sound and it stops broadside. I settle in and squeeze and Bang Flop! Yes!

Literally 30 seconds later while running pup distress I feel my pocket buzz. When it was all said and done, it was another single. Young female. I initially thought it was a YOY but I think it was probably a 1 year old after really assessing things.

After checking my phone, the buzzing was the farmer texting me. It simply said “Are you shitting me! That has to be some kind of record!” Lol…

Time from leaving the farmer to kill shot was less than 10 minutes. I love it when a plan works out!

Excellent Bob, Don't give em time to get lonely- I have a few times went back the same night and killed another.
Apparently, you didn't have much of a hill/rise to climb either if it only took 10mon to kill;)

Well, Mike, it wasn’t the worst hill, but still a decent incline. However, hearing a lone howl close by still puts a pep in my step. I just needed to get to the crown of the hill and I was close when she sounded off. From the barn to where I setup was probably 300-350 yards. Truthfully, the hustle to put the caller out and get back to my tripod was the hardest part! Trucking along in a crouch isn’t my strong point as I’m a little top heavy! 🤣

Edit: I just ran an OnX line distance approximation. Barn to setup approximately 300 yards.

After taking the male of a pair we frequently go back the next day to go after the female.
Often times the landowner will call us and say they hear a lone dog calling like crazy the day after.
Great job on working some cardio into the hunt too !
Maybe I'll play some howls while I'm on the treadmill during PT to get my heart pumping ! :p

Yeah, I think those eastern boys have been sandbaggin' the rest of us all this time. ;)
Well Clarence, I am sure you've heard the one about the blind pig finding and acorn once in awhile :giggle: .
Shooting several in 1 set is a rush and great feeling but there are many nights that I don't hear or see a dang thing, sometimes stretching into 2-3 weeks or more. I would much rather pick up 1 or 2 every couple times out BUT WILL NEVER LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

This post couldn’t have been worded better if I wrote it myself! But what is this shooting several in one set thing you speak of, Mike? 🤔

I knew exactly what you meant, Mike. I was just being a smart ass! 😂 Sometimes just hearing them is a win where I hunt them so the idea of multiples actually showing up is worth joking about! It happens… every once in awhile.

IDK about "rather pick up one or two every couple of times out", Mike. That hunt was awesome and you'll remember it a long, long time. Enjoyed every minute of it through your account; thanks for sharing. (y)
