The Old Maple tree
Night hunting eastern coyotes lends itself to hunting smaller size farms with a lot of time, hours, watching mice, deer, coons, opossum, and an occasional coyote. So, when I get one of Wiley’s cousins in an unplanned event, well, I’ll take it and won’t feel bad. My buddy said, “You’re the luckiest person I know”, well, I don’t know about that. Every time I open the back door I scan the corn field, look across the pond, drive to see if they’ve harvested yet, constantly looking for new properties, and learning something new and implementing it. The time I have invested into this game is, well, lends itself to being retired.
The luckiest hunter I knew showed up to deer camp with his brother, no scouting, no pre-season time, sits down against a tree and goes asleep, wakes up to a 25 point buck in front of him and shoots said buck, now, that’s luck!
Last night the 1st set produced nothing so, we moved on and setup behind Glen’s place. It must’ve been about 1:30AM when Wylie blew up. And blew up, and blew up. We get into a shouting contest with Wylie and threw everything in the book at him and he was closing in, but not quite. We even tempted him with sundries, chocolate bars, a rib eye and cold brew, but he was having none of it. After pausing several minutes, he still just wouldn’t come in and we were trapped by a property boundary, we couldn’t move, so about 2:30AM we packed it up and said enough for tonight.
I was loading up to leave and we were both feeling like we just had our backside handed to us, just couldn’t get him in, reminded us of the same thing happening last year in the very same place. I suspect it’s a coyote with a PhD. in “tactical evasion”, and “intimidating hunters” LOL!
So, I pull in the driveway about 3:00AM get out of the Explorer, grab my scanner, and start looking across the harvested bean and corn fields when at my amazement I get a heat signature not far off. Immediately I open the hatch of the Explorer, reach in my gun case and grab “ole trusty”, slam a mag in and start walking up to the porch. I scanned once again on the porch and sure enough he was still there, Wylie’s cousin. From the porch I couldn’t get a shot, a big maple was in the way. So I walked over to the big maple, slammed one in the chamber, figuring he would run off, fell forward against the maple tree and there he was, still standing. I set the cross hairs on him, squeezed the trigger, and he rolled when the 204r found home. Coyotes, well, they’re either there or they are not, just so happened, tonight, he was there!
