Raccoon Bait?

We have a very large and healthy raccoon population in and around our neighborhood and I have been given the job of trapping and eliminating them. So far in 8 weeks or so, I've only managed to trap 3 (three). My bait of choice has been marshmallows but I am wondering if anyone has a better idea. (Wet cat food was not effective, kibble may have worked but it is hard to tell.

Any ideas would be appreciated. (We are using a Hav A Heart Live Trap and then skipping the live release part)!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif LOL!)

sardines like deerhunter said.. ive had good luck using oreo cookies too... typically with the kids in the house i have an over abundance of them anyway... so i throw two in the traps and i generally catch one...

ive used bologna with salt poured all over it
peanut butter and jelly on bread
rice crispy treats
candy bars

i think you can generally put about anything in the trap sweet and catch a coon in it...

Mini-marshmellows or corn
These are the two items I use while on the trapline. The fish seem to bring the possums....I whack them too.

Keep with the marshmellows and add some PRE-SWEETENED CHERRY KOOL-AID to the set. You'll be able to smell it and the coon will keep working the set even after the trap is long gone. Fish, sardines and fish oil work very if you also want to catch cats and possums.

Last one I caught (first night after i set the jaw trap) was dog food saturated with 'bait mait live trout attractant.' I saturated the dog food with it, sprayed the trap with it, and sprayed it all around the trap to get his attention.

Best I have found is Dog food Mixed with bacon grease and uncooked egg.
I usually take two handfulls of dog food, A tuna can full of bacon grease or a lil more, and crack at least two big eggs in there then mix it all together.
Thats what has worked best for me. Also caught a few with peanut butter mixed with fruit jelly.

vander is on the right track. If the weather is not real wet you can just use dry dog food. Sprinkle a few peices outside the mouth of the trap and more at the back of the trap. They work the free stuff then go in the trap for some more. House cats will sometimes get caught also.

Here is a photo of what is attracted to dry dog food.

Go down to the beach and dig some razor clams. Clean and eat. Save the guts and trimmins. Use them for bait. We used them for years and they work real good and last in the weather. We used them for coon and otter, of course we caught bobcat and opposum in the same sets.

i have found a honey bun to work the best for me i have caught 10 sense september and i only have 2 traps.... so that might be the way to go if you ask me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
