Utards??

So I was reading a post about Wyoming and hunting by Flaming Gorge, someone brought up the phrase "Utards" for Utahns, I'll be honest that's funny, even being a Utahn. But what caught me off guard was someone saying that all surrounding states think poorly of people from Utah. Really? What is it that all us Utahns are doing to upset everyone around us? I can understand people from one state not liking out of staters coming in and shooting "their" coyotes. But that doesn't make anyone bad for doing it, it is totally legal. Shed a little light on this, I am just curious, not looking to argue about it.

I am originally from West River South Dakota...Man have I heard a lot about folks from North Dakota

I am new to this great state as stated before, so I am far from an expert. My guess would be that the salt lake valley just holds so many people who like to hunt. I don't think it is a Utah thing as much as it is a population thing. Somewhere around 1.7 million in the valley. If only 5% hunt, that is a ton of people looking for critters. People trying to spread out and find "their" spot.

That's a guess of course.

Not really sure, what the reasoning is. I'm sure there have probably been a few bad apples that are ruining for the rest of the guys that are doing it right, I think all the states have them. I have some friends from Utah and are stand up guys. I've never had a problem with anyone from any other state honestly. I hunt in Utah when I get a chance or draw a tag. just my .02

Its all in good fun!

When I lived in Mississippi, we made fun of Alabamians.

I moved to Colorado, they made fun of Texans and Californians.

Then moved to Iowa, they made fun of Missourians.

I moved to South Dakota and made fun of Minnesotans.

Now I'm in North Dakota and they make fun of Canadians....and Montanans!

Life's too short, you gotta laugh at someone!

The problems Wyoming sportsmen have are mostly caused by Wyoming residents. Its just easier to blame them on someone else. I've been a resident of the great state of Wyoming for 10 hunting seasons (11 years) and most of the ethics and law violations that I've seen happen have been committed by Wyoming's finest 10%. When I do see someone from Utah breaking the rules it does piss me off a little more and I seem to remember it a little more.
As far as the nickname goes "Utard" it is funny and If the shoe fits wear it. I believe that when you come to a state that you don't reside in to hunt you better be on your best behavior because one bad seed poisons the whole pod.
I hunt coyotes in at least 3 states every year and the thought that the resident owns the coyote upsets me as 90% of the land we hunt on is owned and maintained by the federal govt.
The biggest reason we should be tolerant of out of state hunters is all us hunters have to stick together because the anti's are aligned and organized and one tactic of battle is to divide our numbers.

I was driving through Island Park up here in Idaho and their was a dude on the side of the road with a cardboard sign that read "UTARDS GO HOME!" I had to laugh.

I agree that its all in good fun. I can't see people from one state hating people from onother. Unless your a college football fan! I am from minnesota and i am living in fargo and i have got to say some of the drivers in ND are the worst haha!

Nothing wrong with Utahns or any other westerners (except Californicators of course). It's those folks that live east of the Mississippi that are a little lacking.

(all in good fun guys)

I have, and still do with semi frequency, used the word "utard." To me, it applies only to the excellent driving abilities displayed by many, many Utahns. In truth, it's just one of those stupid things we say. There are as many idiots, per capita, everywhere else in the world as there are in the Salt Lake Valley.

Edit to add: I think everyone, everywhere would like to place blame for their problems, perceived or real, on others, rather than have to take the blame themselves. That is a basic fault of human nature. It is always easier to blame a stranger for a problem than someone familiar. Thus, frequently, the NR is blamed for hunting related issues. In the case above, Utah happens to be the more populated state in the area, thus having more hunters, thus having more hunters going to other states, thus more real and perceived problems. Add that to the fact that "Utard" is a funny word, and...there you go.

I do have an issue with some folks from Utah. Before there were limits in Utah with shed hunting it was not that big of a deal. But recently each spring I see more and more Utah plates and atvs coming to CO to pick up sheds. This would not bother me, but they are getting worse than rifle hunters. They will drive the ATVs all over the woods every fence line etc. We had a group chase a group of buck over 4 miles one day from one spot to the next. They were intentionally following the group in the sage flats hoping to get a shed. I know not all are that way, but still it is getting worse and it will not be long before we have a shed season and loose our privledges as well.

I will also admit that we have Coloturds working on this problem with out the added pressure of Utah folks here as well.

That is about my own issue. I also caught a few that came to CO to hunt yotes etc. with out a Colorado Tag. The one was a guy and son. They had no idea and thought CO was like Utah, and were thankful for the heads up. They decided to head back over to the Utah side. The other 3 guys were jerks told me shut and they would do what they want. I of course have the local DOW officer on cell phone so I called gave location, description, etc. and he came out that after noon caught up with the guys and cited all for hunting with out a lic. 3 weeks later he caught the drive in CO with a bobcat. Again I know it is not all, but in this case 1/2 the guys were jerks.

Yup, some do. When I made my first "Utard" comment on here I got several PM's from other members who shared a border with Utah and thought that it was pretty funny and fitting. When I lived in Idaho they were called 'Carrot Snappers', in Wyoming 'Utards'. If they were from Salt Lake... 'Citiots'.

I should really just leave this one alone...

Let me start by saying that most Utahns I've known are good people and that I am not referring to anyone specifically (except for maybe a few of my inlaws

).

Utahns have surely earned a reputation...

As one member from Utah put it on a previous post: "Utah callers are like locusts swarming in the desert. We are now hated by people from Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana because we have filled our state and are spilling over"

Furthermore they are poor drivers, tailgaters, don't know how to merge, drive inconsiderately, and speed like there is no tomorrow. In my experience their 'sense of space' is skewed as they seem to see no problem with hunting or fishing right on top of other people when there is plenty of room to spread out. They seem oblivious to (as in don't care or don't realize) how their actions affect the people around them; for example once on a busy Saturday at a major boat ramp at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir I watched a group of Utahns pull their boat down the ramp, make half of a turn so they were blocking 2 of the 3 lanes, stop, drop the tail gate, proceed to remove their lunch from their cooler, sit on the tailgate and eat it while a line of people waiting to launch their boats backed up for almost half of a mile. When someone finally got up the nerve to politely ask them to move, they seemed very 'put out', mouthed off, and then roasted the tires on the way out --- Classic 'Utard' behavior... I've also witnessed an unusually high number of tresspassers 'sporting' Utah plates - both within Utah and outside of Utah.

In reality its probably just a few bad apples spoiling it for other Utahns and as Wyoyotebuster stated, we have our fair share of home grown bad apples. My suggestion: when you hunt or travel out-of-state, be on your best behavior as you are an 'ambassador' of your state and your actions do have consequences. It's not only about obeying the laws, it also about being courteous, respectful, and ethical.

Doesn't everyone?

Just kidding.

I married a Utard and remind her she is so often. Its all in fun.

Savage,
You are right, it is legal to come over places like here and hunt so I really can't say anything about it. I think resident callers in any state are protective of THEIR coyotes..... ha ha.

Here in NV as far as I can see, the sport has exploded and making it tough for some guys to have productive days. It gives them all the reason to blame out-of-staters. To me, if i am legal, then i will do what i want.
I now pay the high priced non resident license to hunt other states where night time SHOOTERS are not allowed. Its been much more productive year for me.

Honestly I don't see it any better for Utah's callers to come here..... they have to compete with NV's day HUNTERS, night SHOOTERS, and a ton of trappers.
But if thats what you want to do then ok.

We the Great State of Alabama (I'm speaking for the whole state, even the obnoxious Alabama football fans) owe a great debt of gratitude to the state of Mississippi. If not for Mississippi, Alabama would not be ranked next to last in all things rated, we'd be dead last.

My favorite....How can you tell the tooth brush was invented in the state of ( fill in the blank) ? ....wait for it......in any other state it would have been called a teeth brush....Jim

HA!!! Arkansas is usually pretty stiff competition for last place also!

Ok, having lived here first from 98-01, then from 96 to present, I have to admit that this state is great for raising a family. But, the drivers are terrible. As for hunters, I hate to say it, but I see alot of utah born hunters as being kind of lazy and arrogant. Not all of them, but a good portion. Maybe it is because the state has such a large area to hunt on, public wise, and with more people in the valley, it is ticking some off. I hear more stories of utah born hunters telling other hunters off, hear of more field equipment magically disappearing, and more running animals with atv's and snowmobiles.

But, I love it here, and I love the people that I associate with.

I lived in Utah long enough to see it go from a nice place to live and then degenerate in to a great place to move away from. I never really had any problem with people that had lived in Utah for a long time (with the exception of their lack of driving skills), my greatest agitation came from all the move-ins from California and Nevada. It's ridiculous how many have moved there. In fact, after I left Utah for a while I would refer to Utah as Eastern California. Sadly, the same thing is happening to western Montana and much of Idaho as well. The other big problem with Utah is if you are an avid hunter. The state has been so mismanaged for years that it is difficult to find quality hunting on public land. Then even if you do,and if you are hunting big game, the tags are limited by a drawing system. In my opinion, it's just not a fun place to live if you like to hunt a lot without a lot of parameters. I never had the desire to move back anyway. Seems the happiest hunters in Utah are the one's that can afford to hunt out of state.
