Best Long range scope for my budget??

I ordered my first long range rifle to play with. Savage lrp in a 260 rem. I am having a hard time deciding on a scope. I am trying to keep my price at 500 to give me money for the rest of the stuff I need. Do anyone have any suggestions. Looked at the vortex viper 6x 20x50. Kinda liked it but cant afford the pst. Also the the millet lrs 1.

Vortex are good scopes you will be happy with it. Nikon monarch is in the 500 range depending on which one you get. I have a monarch 6.5-20x44 target model and I'm happy with it. I think it was more toward 600 though. The 500 range gives you lots of options.

Take a look at some of the weaver's. Better glass than the vortex IMO, very reliable turrets if you go to dialing. Do wish that they would make a MOA reticle, though. What kind of reticle are you wanting?

You might look at the Sightron SII series..Not sure what their long range scopes are running price wise, but their glass quality and warranty (should you need it) is lifetime and no hassle...

I never looked thru a Vortex but lots of used Leupold VX111s out there for under $500.I'd go that route before thinking about a Weaver. Not being a snob, I have Weaver classics on my 22s,& have shot both Leupold& Weaver side by side.I bet you can see the difference.

Thanks alot everyone. I was thinking about a mildot reticle.. But will most likely be dialing up with the turrets.

Mil-dots are actually designed to range targets. And very effective once you learn.

pahntr760 Trust me no insult taken. I really appreciate everyones info. I am leaning towards vortex just dont understand all the different models..

Something to think about. You should spend as much or more on your glass then you do your rifle, esp when it comes to long range and dialing.
If I were you I would save some more or find something else to part with and add another 500 to 600 and get a used SWFA 5x20x50HD, the tracking is superb along with the HD glass. Best value for your buck.

You can Pm me if you want to know where to pick up great used scopes.

Again just my opinion

I am interested to see if there is any real world feedback on these two?

Another good scope line, reportiiedly. In searching SWFA.com, I saw these scopes. I have read on here good thing of the Hawk sidewinders. The Falcon look nice, good attributes. I'm just curious on how it would fit this application. I may be looking at a new scope on my PD rig in the future.

I feel somewhat duped on the Vortex scopes. I was shopping last spring and comparing the Vortex Viper 6-20x44 to a Leupold VX-3(I believe a 6-20x50) at the store and I swore the Viper was brighter and more clear, the guy behind the counter agreed with me. I ordered my Viper online and I've been kind of disappointed with it. Eye relief is not to my liking and I see a noticeable difference in brightness and clarity when comparing to some of my other scopes. This is just my experience of course.

I wouldn't blame it all on the Vortex..

Checking out scopes in stores is tough, the range is short and the artificial light can even make a BSA look good. Still one might look better than another but its real potential or downfalls are not really noticed until taken outdoors. If your in a store that will let you take a few outside then the next problem comes up, your just looking thru one then another switching back and forth never looking thru one for an extended amount of time. Your eyes don't get a chance to settle into any of them. You might pick a Vortex today and a Leupold tomorrow.

The next problem and the biggest one is.. You just can't hold them steady enough while looking thru them to make a solid decision as to clarity. Those little stock thingies that they clip the scope into dont help much either because you can't use any of the adjustments without knocking the scope free of the chicken chit rubber mount. Cheek weld is non existent, eye relief is all out of wack etc... .just a bad deal all around.

Unfortunately your not much different than the rest of us that had to spend the money to find out you didn't like them.

Quote:I feel somewhat duped on the Vortex scopes....That is something that I've wondered about over the years...Not just Vortex, but a couple of others as well...

When I was at the annual NRA meeting in St Louis, before 2005, and I first ran into the Vortex line, I was very impressed with the clarity in the convention center as I could see the paint drips up along the ceiling heating pipes at the far end of the building in less than perfect lighting and mentioned that on this website a couple of times...

Shortly after that I was reading comments about similar negative experiences with the Vortex line, but I have no idea of the overall quality level of scope that they had on display for 'hands on' demonstration, but it was enough to make me wonder if some manufacturers don't put out 'excellent' factor optics for display, but package less than 'excellent' items for general sale...I guess that over the years I've found so many "Bait & Switch" type programs that I tend to be skeptical of almost any promotion...

I know that if I were looking for an optic in a store now, and found one that impressed me, I would only buy the demo model that I liked...or I wouldn't buy at all..
