Best Long range scope for my budget??

Hi Mt. Boy,

I recently got the exact same gun as you. Mostly for target shooting but the occasional groundhog or deer I guess. Please PM me with how you make out with different loads and bullets. I bought a Nightforce MOAR ACTR for the gun and I'm broke but always wanted to own one great set up and don't have the money for another in this lifetime so I hope it is as great as a custom gun.

The Burris C4 isn't a bad scope for the money. However, I have both a 1" and 30mm version and I think the 1" has better optics. I also have a VX-6 that is great glass.

Thanks for the info.. Came across a good deal on nikon monarch 4x16x50 but not sure if it has enough adjustment to get me where i need. Any info

That scope will have plenty to get you to 1k. A decent 130 bullet will drop about 29 MOA at 1000 with a 250 yard zero. If you have it on a 20 MOA base and you'll never run out of turrets.

Ok thanks It says it has 34 moa of adjustment. And the 20 moa base will give me 54 or am i figuring this wrong?? Please bare with me I am pretty new at this..

In theory, yes. It will all depend on where you are at when you zero. But, depending on the load, this scope will serve you well for a while. And, FWIW, Nikon lists 40 MOA adjustment.

I would pick the Nikon over the Vortex any day. The Nikon is going to have superior glass.

I spent about 18 months researching this subject 3 years ago. Went to every store I could find within 200 miles that had a good selection of scopes. Looked through many, many scopes. Here is my opinion on the subject:

1. Vortex has a cult following. They do have great CS. They make quality scopes with a lot of features. HOWEVER, if glass quality is what you seek Vortex is not on top. Not even close.

2. For a varmint rifle you cannot go wrong with a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20 with varmint reticle. Glass is amazing, and the reticle will help. Under $1K.

3. I had a Nikon Buckmaster in 4.5-14 that had amazing glass compared to Leupold and Zeiss. I paid less than $250 for the Nikon.

4. I have a Sightron SII Big Sky in 4.5-14. It has amazing glass that competes with Zeiss and Leupold VX3.

5. When folks say scopes are brighter than Leupold VX3 I wonder if they truly understand glass. Just like a TV glass can have a "cool" picture or a "warm" picture. Leupold glass is a "warm" picture.

6. You simply cannot go wrong with a Leupold VX3, Zeiss Conquest, Sightron SII or SIII.

7. I have a SWFA SS12x mil mil. Glass quality is disappointing, but it's build like a tank and has a nice reticle with great turrets.

Right now I have Bushnell 4200s, Leupold VX3s, Zeiss Conquest, Sightron SII big sky, Leupold Vari-X II, SWFA SS, and a Leupold VX-R.

Or, forget price and get a Swarovski.

mt boy...This is one case I have to side with rookie7....The Sightron SII that I have, when compared to the Leupold VX-3 in the same power range is equal, or better, at almost half the cost...My Sightron 4-16 has exceptional clarity when compared to many others that I've used, including the Nikon Monarch that I sold...

I really appreciate all your guys info. What kills me is I live kinda in the middle of no where so its kinda hard to go and see these scopes in person. The closest store that would carry most of these scopes is about 3 hrs away. But might have to bite the bullet and make the trip.. I do have a couple nikon buckmasters and 2 new redfields and I am happy with the glass in both of them. I think to me fuction quality is the most important. But I understand shooting long range I might need to reconsider that.
