I hunt solo at night quite a bit, mostly on private land I know well, and I do take a few precautions that help me feel a little more confident out there. Around here in Idaho, I’ve run into cats and bears more than once, but nothing’s ever come close enough to make me feel like I was in real danger. Still, I always run thermal, keep the Foxpro 50–75 yards out, and set up with the wind in mind so predators don’t circle behind me.
I use a headlamp on low red for walking, and I never go in blind—always scout in daylight first. If I’m off trail, I’ll wear gaiters or snake boots depending on temps, and I carry a sidearm, not for coyotes, but for peace of mind. Solo hunting can be quiet and productive, just don’t get complacent and trust your gear.
