250 savage?

I made a trade of a lifetime last night. I have a friend who has been trying to get me to swap some rifles with him for sometime now. He wanted two of my old military rifles for some unknown reason. So I broke down last night and bent him over. He gave me a Rem 700 BDL in .243 that is in brand new condition (only 4 boxes of ammo through it), for a chinese SKS and a Tula M44, along with $50. I already have a very accurate .243 Win. My best friends dad saw the 700 BDL last night and want to trade for a Ruger M77 in 250 savage that is in equal condition to the 700. I don't know much about the 250 savage, but as many quarter bore fan that are on here I thought I might be able to get some advice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Make the trade, NOW...Grins
The 250 Savage is an outstanding round. I have a custom made 250 on a Mauser 98 action that is just a perfect light recoil Deer rifle.
You have a 243 now, and trading the newly acquired 243 even up for a 250 is an upgrade for you.
Mine shoots 90 grain bullets into a 3/8" group at 100 yards for 3 shots.

MPFD,

DON'T DO IT! If you have witnessed, or are afflicted with,
Evil Black Rifle Disease, then you will have just a bit
of an idea of the suffering we quarterbore sickies are
enduring /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I have this horrible lusting for .25
caliber rifles, and it all started one day in a little
out of the way gun shop, that was going out of business.
On the rack was this beautiful new SS/Laminate Tikka M695,
in 25-06 Rem. This was a new caliber for me, and little
did I know the power it would hold over me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I handled
it, and was mildly impressed. The shop owner said, "Cycle
it, and pull the trigger". I did, and this thousand yard
stare came over me, and I heard myself saying, "Fill out the
papers". Later at the range, behind my hunting cabin, I
put some rounds down range, and I was beyond help. Today
I lust after 257 Roberts, 250 Savages, 25 WSSM, 257
Weatherbys, and a bunch of different .25 caliber wildcats.
I have it bad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

All kidding aside, if you already have a 243 Win, then
by all means trade for the 250 Savage. Ask if you can shoot
a few rounds with it, to see if it feels good, and shoots
well. FWIW, I don't own a 243 Win, but I do own a couple
of quarterbores. For my 6mm fix, I had to go to a Savage
re-barreled in 6mm Rem. That is all that did was to
increase my lust for a 257 Roberts(both based on the 8mm
Mauser/7mm Mauser case).

I am also afflicted with Evil Black Rifle Disease. And
I am not looking to enter re-hab, for my diseases /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Squeeze

The 250 info I've gotten from remington and winchesters ammo sites looks kinda anemic. But are they just down loading the cartridge because of its old age?

The other option is to sell the 700 BDL for a "BLACK GUN"!!!

You likely have a Ruger M-77 ( tang safety) in 250/3000. Not many of those 250 Savages around. You did well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I haven't made the trade yet, I don't know enough about a 250 savage to trade off a proven caliber.

My very first bolt gun was a Ruger M77 in 250/300. That was back in 1978. I killed several deer with that rifle as well as many a groundhog. It does a fine job on both. Factory rounds are a tad on the weak side, but reload for mine. I still shoot that fine rifle toady for coyotes and and other critters. The 250/300 is a fun gun to shoot and accurate to boot. I would make the trade with no hesitations.

The .250 is the parent case of the .22-250 and if I am not mistaken, came out originally in the savage m99 lever gun. I think it was the first cartridge commercially loaded that beat the 3000 fps mark. I have been wanting one in the Model 99 Savage for quite awhile but they are kind of pricey for a thin barreled lever gun. I just like the looks of the savage 99s. Saying all that, I'm not sure I'd trade a .243 BDL for a plain Ruger M77 just for the cartridge.

There is a lot of history in the 250 Savage that is sorta nostalgic to me. I'm not sure of all of this (what I don't know I just make up) but I think the 300 Savage came out in the 1930's to provide a 30 cal cartridge that approached 30-06 capabilities in the Savage lever gun, the Savage 99. (I have a thing about Savage 99s) Later they necked it down to 25 caliber, loaded it with 87 gr bullets and marketed it as the 250-3000 because it was the first commercial cartridge to break the 3000 fps mark. You can still find a few old 99's marked as 250-3000.

Commercial ammo is probably loaded with the old lever guns in mind so they are a little anemic. But it is a great little round and a lot fun. Like Lonnie said, the 22-250 is a 250 Savage case necked down to 22. That is a pretty good recommendation itself.

The 250 is not as potent as the 243 (I have them both and love the 243, its my go-to gun) but you'll like the 250 for other reasons.

If it was me, I'd do it.

Pat, you knowledge of history is acute. Several years ago, I ran across a rebarrelled 700 shot action. On the barrel is stamped "shilen 250 imp.) The pawn shop owner said he was gonna play with it and see what it would do. It wasn't for sale. Everytime I went by I would check on the gun and try to buy it again. I stopped in one day and he said he had fired a 250 savage round in it. Fully expecting it to blow the shoulders out to a 250AI chamber. The case looked like a pregnant woman. We began to explore the possibilities. It turned out to be a 25-284. He ordered some Hornady custom dies and necked down some 284 brass. Perfect match. He ran into some health problems and sold me the rifle, dies, scope and mounts for 300 dollars. I just finished working up a load with a 90 Seirra. Getting 3150 and .5 groups from it.

The 250 is another cartridge not many have heard of a very good combo gun I would snatch the trade if you haven't already
Enjoy it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If that 77 is a tang safety, you will be getting a heck of a gun that is bringing a hefty premium these days. That 250 with a 75 grain V-Max and H380 powder will shoot the eyes outta a snake and kill the snake too. DO IT NOW!!! I have 2 of those 77 tangs in 250, they are light, accurate, and a GREAT rifle for killing deer and yotes. Mine have Loopy 2-7 scopes on them and they are simply lovely guns to carry and shoot.

Pat B, the 250-3000 came out before the 300. About 1915. I have a Savage 99 in 250, one of my favorite rifles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I too am a 250-3000 owner, a Savage 99 TD model. It is one of the older ones with the 1-14+ twist and won't shoot factory ammo under six inches but shines with 75gr flatebase HP's, under 2 inches for five shots with the old Weaver K-2.5, 87gr Speer hotcores are my go to deer load. I like the way the old 250 shoots so much that I developed a 25 cal wildcat based on the 204 Ruger case that duplicates the 250 ballistics, 87gr at 3000fps and the 100gr at 2750fps. I'm still looking for a good coyote bullet though, 75gr HP at 3200fps turned out to be too hard on the pelts. I have a bunch of 75gr X bullets that I'll try out this season.

You can get bulk plain base 85gr cast bullets that are intended for the 25-20 and load them over a light charge of 700X(check lyman cast bullet handbook) that work great for small game and close in varmints.

Not yet, I'm waiting him out, cause it's not going anywhere and I'm trying to get him to throw in a die, and some brass.

What kind of speeds can I get that 250 up to, My Hornady manual didn't make it look as good as the .243. The Remington sure is a shooter though, I've never owned a Remington due to budget restraints. I must say I'm impressed. It even stabilzed my 58gr hot coyote loads, that my old .243 doesn't like.
