What are your guy's feeling good /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif or bad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif on the j-lock that remingtom has on some of their bolts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif?

Picky fellas hate 'em, but not sure it makes a ton of difference for an average coyoteman. I have J lock and non J, and both triggers adjusted up fine for my needs.

I don't know if affects lock time, etc. I can't tell the difference. Can't see the difference in my groups.

I kind of like the locking option, and do use it. I think I'm the only fella on this board that thinks its a good idea /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The thing I don't like is that it can be locked by anything, but have to be unlocked by the little key (that I can never find /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif) I have replaced all the ones I used to have with callahan fp assemblies. I still have some keys floating around the house somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can find them. If they ever turn up I'll send them to you Sleddog.

So is there anyway to have the j-lock removed and have something else put in it's place? Is it that you have to keep track of the keys, or something else about these?

Aside from being unattractive, and killing resale value, they have been known to creep into "lock" position on their own, so if you don't have the key, and you are 800 miles from home, you are punk outta luck.

I replace the only one I ever bouthy, and would not buy another, unless I allowed for the cost to replace it.

.

As mentioned it does hinder the performance of the gun, in fact the action functions the same unless you put the key in it and lock it. Other than that... thats it. I myself do not care for the look as brdeano mentioned and I swapped mine out as well.

Pull the bolt apart and see how the firing pin spring is kinked up - This has to cause rubbing inside the bolt body which will increases lock time. I installed an aftermarket firing pin assembly in my LVSF and can tell everything just works better. There are documented cases (in a quick web search) where the J lock button has been accidentally pushed in and gotten stuck. Nobody uses the locks anyway! Same with S&W, lots of documented cases of the gun locking while being fired in their flag lock system. From what I have seen, Remington has backed off the J lock installs but S&W owns the company that designed their system according to knowledgeable folks on the S&W forum.

I think I will replace mine to. sound like a relativly easy job. Any special tools required? I've never pulled a bolt apart but though.

The J-lock is a piece of junk and it does effect the guns accuracy and thats why i replaced mine. I went with new scroud and David Tubb fireing pins and springs..T.A.

I have two Rem 700 223 ADLs. One with the J-Lock and one without. I just leave mine unlocked and the key in my shooter's box. Both work the same and I have never had mine lock by itself as mentioned above. Have shot 2500 rounds through it so far.

It's easy with a bolt disassembly tool. Sinclair has several different ones.

I've been told by no fewer than four gun-shop gurus that due to the way the J-Lock is designed, that this can't happen.

Yeah....right. My 700VLS in 6mm Rem did it on it's third trip to the range. And you could not tell by looking at the "indicator" that it had moved even a smidge.

I own 2 Rem 700's that used to have J'locks on them.

I have a BDL with the J-lock. Can't see any difference in how it shoots, and how my other two 700's without the j-lock shoot. I've never lcoked it and never had it creep into the locked position.
