00 buckshot in rifled barrel

Is there anything I should know about before firing 00 buckshot in a rifled shotgun barrel made for slug? The manufacturer does not mention about using buckshot in rifled barrel in the manual.

I am looking at the Charles Daly semi-auto shotgun. Does anyone have any experience with it to share? Thanks

I think we just beat this horse.. It will not hurt the firearm but the pattern will be horrific. Likely not useful beyond 20 yards.

I've taken people's word for it, since it's expensive ammo, but the word is that it'll throw the pattern very wide, very fast.

Anything you should know? You won't hit anything at much beyond spitting distance with such a set-up. Rifling and shot do not go together.

Thanks guys. I am glad I asked. Save me from wasting my hard earned dollars.

I want to get a shotgun for wild hog hunting. Range is from 10 yards to 75 yards, and the herd moves very fast. I need a fast shooting shotgun capable of good accuracy with 00 buckshot.
Should I get an 18" cylinder bore barrel or should I opt for a 24" turkey barrel with tight choke? Please excuse my ignorance. I have not owned a shotgun before and just got to fire one last weekend.

What about Charles Daly semi-auto shotgun? any advices from the wise.

Get a barrel that accepts choke tubes and assemble as many different brands and loads as you can and the same for chokes. Go nuts from there...

John, thanks for pointing me to that shotgun pattern thread. That is very helpful.

GC, thanks for taking time and resources to run the test. It certainly helps a shotgun newbie like me to get a grip on the subject. I don't think I have time/resources to go nut like you did. Them hogs are going nut, I need hog medicine immediately...:))

Interesting. I fired 000 buck through my rifle barrelled shotgun about a month ago and was AMAZED that the pattern was as tight as it was! The snake occupying a hollow knot-hole in the tree couldn't stand how well it patterned. That was from appx. 10yd. Ever since that time I've meant to try it out on targets. So far it seems like most responses have been from the 'I think it will do this' standpoint? Has anybody actually tested this?

I have a charles daly auto shotgun, IMO if its your only shotgun, save some more money and get a better one, they are ok at best and suffer from feeding issues. I like mine to a degree, but I dont trust it.

If you are hunting things that could get angry and run after you, this IS NOT a good gun for you.

you could always get a good pump gun and with a little practice be fast enough that the hogs wont know its not an auto loader.

have you thought about a lever action 30-30 or .44 mag? those may be the medicine your looking for.

Good luck

Dave

Yes...

My unofficial test goes like this. Upset with a chipmunk so I grab my rifled barreled 870 and some 1&1/8 oz. 7&1/2 shot size trap loads and commence to give him three rounds at approximately 20 yds. his reaction was being startled at the sound of the shot and all the commotion of shot hitting in a big area out and around from him but he sat right there and let me level off and keep trying. After three shots I gave up and let him live. My buddy who shotgun hunts deer a lot was always in the camp of mixing slugs and buckshot for hunting in the river bottoms behind his house. When he purchased a rifled slug gun I told him of my expeirience with shot in a rifled barrel so he took a square of card board that was a little over 2 ft. sq. fired three rounds of buckshot at it and put 1 hole in the cardboard. He said it was around the 20 yd range also.
That is all the actual expierience I need.
