03/22 coyote

Well, I had all intentions of making several stands this morning, but one stubborn coyote changed all that.

I had a good steady SW wind so I figured I’d work the property from front to back (North to South)
I’d been calling here and there mainly trying to locate some for when the winds were right and set up where I “thought” they’d be this morning.

Again, I was planning on making several stands with just some howls, pup sounds, and then fights and if that didn’t work I’d pack up and move to the next spot.

First stand, I followed my predetermined script and at the second howl, I saw a coyote a LONG ways away for down here, over 500yds in a new pond we’d had dug out. He was working the far side but heading my way. I could catch glimpses of him so I hit some pup sounds, no distress, just pup sounds. After a few minutes of seeing nothing, I stopped everything and stood in silence for about 3-4 minutes while frantically scanning.

I decided to hit some love sick howls and he answered, but was out of sight and not much closer. I went through a few more love howls but he wasn’t having any part of it. I went to a hooked up pair and caught another glimpse of him somewhat closer but still not committing. I went to another fight and he started to slowly move my compass heading but still a ways out. He wasn’t trying to wind me or if he was, he’s taking the long long way to get around me. I stopped the caller for about a minute and tried some vole squeaks to no avail.

I can spot him more frequently now in the brush and he crosses a road to my SW. At least we’re now in the same ballpark, but he’s not committing. In fact, I’m starting to think he’s deaf.

He gets in the 200-300yd range and now I’ve lowered the volume thinking maybe that’ll make him curious if he’s not deaf!! It did nothing, but learned he could actually hear when I lip squeaked and he stopped to stare. Guess the sound was taking a little bit because he wasn’t stopping where I wanted him to stop!! He was slowly working his way around and I knew from his elevation advantage he would be able to soon see the truck, not that it would’ve mattered.

He finally gave me what I figured was my last opportunity, so I took the frontal shot at just shy of 200yds and got to hear that glorious THUMP and watch him fall!

Reading this it doesn’t seem that long of a hunt, I was just shy of 1.5hrs working that uninterested coyote! I did realize that my coyotes are just like what I read about on here when people talk about seeing coyotes a good distance away and the coyotes just not coming in yet they could see them out there. I’ll post the condensed video vs the LONG one, lol.

Needless to say, in order to find this coyote I decided to just stay at that spot and wait for daylight. It wasn’t a long wait to be honest, but once I could see decently, I realized that was a poke for down here. The fact he went to high ground was the only way I could see him. No telling how many have done the same thing on level ground and I’ve never known it.

Anyway, it sure did feel GOOD to have a successful hunt! Now just waiting for the next good wind and try some coyotes on the South side of the property.

And I have to show off the dreaded DeathGrip and diaper bag!!

All j/king aside very nice write up Mark glad to see the results.

Congrats! Lately it seems that they're just not interested. I've had 2 where I could clearly seem them in the distance and nothing I tried worked.
