1 coyote/day for the last 3 days --- behind the barn!

Wednesday - Talking to Dr. Ken Howell on the phone and pouring a cup of coffee and see from the kitchen window a coyote walk from behind the barn in to the millet patch for my horses...Tell Ken I got to go shoot a coyote, he said "Get it, get it, get it"...grabbed a 22-6mm Rem. I keep handy for such occasions and dropped it at 150 yds. (shot one out there in the same place a week before)

Thursday - fishing my keys out of my pocket to go into the shop and see one walking out of the millet patch and heading behind the barn...grab the 22-6 and drop it at 85 yds.

Friday - standing outside my gunshop I see a little flash about 500 yds. out in the pasture out back. Grab the bino's and can't tell exactly what it is but might be the ears of a coyote laying down...grab the old wooden Circe I've had for 35 yrs. and the 22-6 and do some calling...after about 10 minutes still nothing happening...still see that little dot out there that I can't quite make out with the binoculars so I throw up the rifle with it's 14X and sure enough I can make out the face & ears of a coyote...still laying there. OK - Show time...for real. Run in the house and throw on a camo T-shirt and grab my silver dog howler, shooting sticks and face net...and of course, the 22-6. Using a little bit of a rise, the barn and some mesquite bushes for cover, I make my way out there and close the gap a little...get set up against a mesquite and give it a lone howl...up pops a head looking around, looking around, back down, back up, looking around, looking around...did a pup distress and up pops a head, looking around, looking around...looks like it might be getting nervous and might jump up and "JET" so I got good and steady on the sticks and stuck one behind the ear while it was laying there...paced it off at 250 yds.

Saturday - today I turned 50 yrs. old...maybe the "Coyote Gods" will give me a birthday present this morning...out behind the barn.

First......Happy Birthday!!!

I just love coyote hunting in New Mexico! Your songdog Karma is good right now.......go for it!!

Good Hunting,

Bob

Greg, since you live in Hobbs, maybe you could tell me how the coyote hunting is around the Jal area. A friend of mine is going to be living on a 50 section ranch over there and said I could hunt varmints, but I was told the other day that that area has been trapped out and they used sianiad last year. It will cost me any out of state small game license and it is an hour and twenty minutes from Midland. Also my kids haven't been through a hunters safety course yet and I understand they have to have it there, but they can hunt with me over here in TX without it. Thanks for any help you can give. L.T.

larry i know there was at least one coyote in jal, but i think we killed it. it took a lot of killing too, one 17 rem in the hind quarters, one in the neck and a 22-250 to the side of the head and it was still alive.

Larry,

I get one of those $50 annual non-resident licenses every year. You are about to have a bunch of fun!!!!!

Good Hunting,

Bob C.

Calypso, I guess you go down there to hunt on the state and BLM lands. Even though they told me the area I was thinking about hunting, Jal, has been heavily trapped by the gov't. trapper and they used sianiad last year, I see at least two or three dead coyotes on the four lane between Jal and Eunice every time I drive through Jal. That use to be twice a week, but only one day a week now. There must still be lots of yotes in that area. Might have to give it a try. I bought the map for the area, guess there's not a whole lot of public land in the Jal area. I here there's good hunting west of Hobbs on public land. To far for me to drive in the A.M.

Bob, 1st...thanks for the birthday wishes. I laugh every time I see the "There is plenty of room for all of God's creatures.....right next to the mashed potatoes." at the bottom of your post's...that's funny. Yeah, I love hunting coyotes in New Mexico too but there are plenty of coyotes across the state line in West Texas. This whole area (100 mile radius from Hobbs) has a lot of coyotes. Certain isolated pockets can really be loaded. It is amazing how many there are on the fringes of town and even inside the city limits.

Living this close to the Texas state line, if I want to do very much hunting I've got to buy a Texas hunting license...you guy's get off cheap for $50 to hunt over here, it cost me $125 for a licenses to hunt coyotes on you.

Larry, I live 1/2 way between Hobbs & Lovington and I seldom go hunting down in the Jal area...not that it isn't a good area for coyotes, I just don't need to go that far to get into good hunting so I don't have much experience down there.

You didn't say what ranch your friend will be on but last fall/winter they called in a government trapper and I was told he took 300 coyotes off of the San Simone Ranch...I think the San Simone is back north and west of Jal. That's about all the info I have. Hope it works out for you to get into some good hunting. I think you are right about your kids needing the hunter safety course.

Beagler, it's more of a necessity to shoot the coyotes around the house...I live in the country on a small farm and it's a "catch 22" between scores of rabbits eating up your wheat pasture in the winter (makes you want to leave the 'yotes alone to help control them)...or...coyotes killing your cats around the place...and you dang sure need your cats or the mice will take over. I've tried it both ways and being mouse free and shooting the coyotes and rabbits is by far the best way I've found...and the most fun.

Shotgun, amazing how tought they can be. I just bought a .243 for that reason, but I want some hides this year, so I recently picked up a .223 from a guy who never shot it. I get most of my dogs with a 12 gauge at close range, since I hunt around Crane,tx in the mosquite and greesewood. Don't get those long shots but its exciting. Went out yesterday and patterned the Moss. 500 with some nickle plated lead BB,s. Hated the way the 4 buck patterned, didn't really resemble a pattern out of my gun, and I always had to shoot em twice. Hate that. The bbs pattern great, hope they're enough. Good huntin' guys.

Greg, you must be hunting close to that Goff dairy. I'm getting to know that area fairly well since I'm an outside salesman for Ace Spec,s. out of Odessa and I call on Ferguson Const. up there every Thursday. The ranch I'm talking about is north west of Jal on the Cooper cemetary rd. Not sure what they call it but it is owned by the Crawfords. See dead coyotes on the road right by it every time I drive by. If I can't find some more land close by I'll probably make the drive and try it.

larry, i have two good friends from crane dave de long and john hinnant. they grew up there but havn't lived there in years. they do talk about the hunting there when they were kids.

Larry,

Yeah, I live not too far back east-southeast of the Goff dairy. Back when I dove hunted quite a bit, you couldn't beat the dove hunting down that Jal Cooper Cemetary Road...no doubt some of the very best dove hunting I ever got into. I think the San Simone is still 10-15 miles further northwest from where you are talking about. It might be worth scouting out before you plunk down the money for the license if that is the only place you intend to hunt. There is still a bunch of BLM land in that area that you can hunt on if the ranch doesn't work out. State lands are "off limits" for (unprotected species) coyote, prairie dog & rabbit hunting but OK for hunting protected species...go figure the idiots that dreamed up that law...it's in the Game & Fish Proclamation.

Good luck

Larry,

Most of my New Mexico hunting is up near Logan. I hunt two ranches with 96,000 acres. I also do some hunting in Socorro County on private ranches and State/BLM land.

Good Hunting,

Bob

shotgun willy,

...the land commisssioner signed the paperwork allowing the leasee to give permission to shoot coyotes on state land if he wants.

I hadn't heard this news. Good, that's at least a step in the right direction.

Two months ago the State stopped its 4 year, $290,000 program to reduce the coyote population to help improve the deer herds...they said..."habitat loss and drought are the main reasons the deer population is shrinking in New Mexico".

Kind of stupid IMO for the State to ban coyote hunting on state land on one hand and for the State to pay contract trappers to kill coyotes on the other...Duh...

Gregg, great to see you out and about. Fixing to get fired up over this way. Just picked up 76 sections of prime virgin calling country. Bad thing is the snakes are crawling like crazy. Got 3 in about 30 min. Monday evening while checking out one of the places. Ready to get my 22/6 and Swift out to work their magic. Have a good one.

Hey Bob,

Sounds like you won the "Coyote Lease Lotto"...that's a bunch of ground to cover. Snuggling up to a mesquite along side a 5 ft. Diamondback ain't good for the nerves though...tends to make you "wobbly" on them shooting sticks. Winter time should give you some relief from the snakes and drop the mesquite leaves...should be some great hunting. Good luck.
