1 in 8 twist .223? Isn't this too fast? Tikka

Guys, just curious, i'm after a new varmint rig, i'd like to try a .204 ruger but i really like the Tikka's and so i would choose the .223 but i look at the specs and for the .222 its 1 in 14 twist and the same for .22-250 but for the .223 it says 1 in 8? Will it be okay for the 40-50 grain stuff?

I just sold my T3 lite in .243 with its 1 in 10 twist and it shot the 55 grain stuff at 3910 okay? Just want to make sure the 1 in 8 for .223 is okay?

Go to m-14forum.com, go to The Firing Point (the ar-15 thread) and do a search of rifling twist. They will tell you everthing you want to know about the m-14 or m-16(ar-15) rifle.

My RRA .223 has an 8 twist.

The only handloads I have had any luck with were 69 grain Nosler comp bullets. That thing won't shoot 55 grain Nosler BT's for diddly squat.

It will however shoot the Winchester white box varmint pack 45 grain HP's MOA or a little better at 100 yds. I have been using these for coyote killing.

Blakeinator, I have a RRA with a 1/8 and it really likes the 55gr nosler BT's. I haven't tried anything lighter than that. Good luck.

I agree. I can't figure that one out though. I have the 18" and its grouping mid .6's. These are loaded by a guy in Texas City, Texas and I buy them by the 100. I shoot them out of my LTR 1/9 twist too and it likes them too. I have the reloading tools down at the ranch but keep buying these. Im lazy but the coyotes and hogs don't seem to mind /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Who knows.... mine is the 20" and the 69 grain Noslers will do .5's from a bench all day long... I have been lazy too and just been using the winchester stuff for hunting.

I am thinking powder used might have something to do with it. I have been using Alliant powders for all of my reloading. (RL15 for the .223)

Back to the original question, I think Blakeinator will be fine with the 8 twist Tikka.

Blakeinator, I have a Tikka T3 in .223 with the 1" in 8" twist and have shot bullets from 45gr to 65 gr and it shoots them all VERY well. Sub MOA easliy. You won't be disappointed.
Good Luck!

Beauty! Thats exactly what i was lookin for. I wish they offered the .204 but i just can't bring myself to try out the CZ...i know it would be good but once you've had a Tikka...its hard (detach mag is only way to fly also imo, so choices limited to those two anyhow). Think i might try the laminate stainless this time round...won't need a camo kit on that one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I have the Tikka T3 Varmit and just sold a T3 lite, 223's both.
Winny white box 45, 1/4 thru 1/2 inch,,, 55 grain, all I tried but Remington went under 1 inch. I have not tried heavier.
You'll love it.
Carl

I also wish they would make a 204

Blake, if you want to be limited in the type of bullets you can shoot from your .223 by all means don't get the 1 in 8! I only use 1 in 8's for the .223's. My 1 in 8's will shoot 40gr factory ammo into 1/2 inch or better 10-shot group averages with loads they like. Don't be fooled into thinking a 1 in 8 is only for heavy bullets. Tikka and Sako are the only ones in the gun world smart enough to figure this out. I am proud of them!

All rifles are different and don't expect them to shoot the same bullets/loads well. They won't! You just have to figure out what it likes and go from there.

I have a Tikka T-3 Lite in 223 Rem with the 8" twist barrel and it shoots all bullets I've tried in it from the 40 grain V-Max to the 70 grain Speer semi-spitzer extremely well.

c'mon tikka...where's the .204, there would have been no question if it was available...but i guess i was sold more on the caliber than the gun this go round...sorry for buggin yall just to change my mind at crunch time, the laminate stainless is the bomb...put in .204 and i'll be buying another gun likely /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
