The reason that lighter bullets don't usually shoot well in faster twist barrels is quite simple and once you hear it you'll easily understand. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
The lighter bullets travel faster. The rotational speed is therefore greater. The ultra fast rotational speed amplifies any eccentricities, however small, in jacket uniformity (read weight) and therefore you're much more likely to get fliers in fast twist barrels with light bullets.
That's why bench rest shooters are so picky about twist rates. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
They want the bullets to spin at just enough rotational speed to stabilize the bullets but not fast enough to amplify jacket uniformity any more than absolutely necessary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Get it??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
the reason I wouldn't try it is because I think you would have much better luck at finding an accurate bullet that weighed around 50 gr or more in such a fast twist barrel.
Just my experience and preference. I have tried it but not found any acceptable accuracy with them in my gun.

I just picked up my first AR, a Predator that will wear a Burris 4x-16x scope. I post this as I also have a Parker-Hale in a 243 with a 3x-9x Redfield. I went for the Predator because of the 1:8 twist as I need to use a scope, and want longer range capability.

I have talked about this barrel twist thing on here many times. From our experiences, 1 in 8 twists are the best way to go for the AR. They generally shoot a large variety of bullet weights well from 40 to 80's. 1 in 9's are generally not as happy with most bullets. They generally like 52's or 55's with some showing a preference to other bullets. They generally only like a couple of bullet weight ranges.
I have a Savage 10 Tactical with a 1:9 that favors 52 gr Sierra hp to 60 gr at a decreasing performance ratio. Thats a lot of ladder tests. It shoots 1" groups but not consistently, but its random with loads and bullets. So I am having it trued and what ever they can do. I realize the problem could be ME.
To reply I think the 52gr to 60gr would be you envelope of opportunity. Take a 55gr factory, shoot for accuracy, chrony, then match it. No one said it was easy, but for most it is fun.
