1 rifle for woods bummin?

I sure hope you're right.. That would be just about perfect IMO..

Another gun on my wish list that was talked about for a while is a CZ 453 in 5mm..
That would fill the void (wheather real or precieved) pretty nicely too...



Greg Meyer..... Marlin chambered a lever in 25/20. The ones I've seen have the DU coin in the stock so people try to make them into an overpriced collectors item, but I did see one at a gunshow a few years ago for six bills.
Thats a long way from 300 but so are most of the guns that are we're talking about.. Including the ones you mentioned... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I have to admit, I was reading this topic and I started looking online at gun broker to see what is out there in a lever action rifle (one of the additions that my gun safe requires) and I ran across a 17hmr varmit express by Henry. I currently have a savage with the accu trigger that I can hit the primers out of empty rifle cases at 50yds. but is not a lever action. I know you said you didn't want a rimfire, but for all the critters you are talking about, how many times have you been out bumming in the woods and run into a coyote? It has only happened once to me..............Take a look at that henry, it is a great looking little gun and I bet it is light as well
 
My favorite bummin around rifle is my 100 year of M94 Marlin in 25-20WCF. I use only hard cast bullets out of this one at around 1900-2000 fps. Those 100-150 yard shots would be iffy, but with the Williams 5-D peep it gets the job done at normal woods ranges. The 24" tapered octagon barrel hangs nicely and the slim lines make for enjoyable carry. Marlin made quite a few 22" M94CL rifles a few years back in 218 Bee, 25-20, and 32-20, might be able to find one of those. Probably more of them were made in 357 Mag. and 44 Mag. These rifles make great pieces for just spending time in the woods.

It is a nifty little round. I have one in a Ruger pistol. Killed a PD out in Colorado with the 32 S&W long ammo.

I have the same pistol, Randy. It is my "bummin' around in the woods" pistol. I shoot 100gr bullets at around 1100fps out of it. It is a little more potent than it gets credit for.........

I, too have a Ruger .32. Mine has the polished stainless finish and faux-ivory birdshead grips. Great little gun. At least it will be when I get a new front sight for mine. Well after a good nights sleep, another gun show and 4 businesses that sell guns this is what I've come up with:

Centerfire Lever gun: .357 or 32 mag is tops. I already reload these and have revolvers in those calibers. Also, if Iowa goes the same direction as Indiana, I might be able to use the .357 for deer hunting. Other calibers could be many of the smaller calibers like the .22 Hornet, 32/20, etc. Passed on a .44 Marlin that the dealer was "asking" $395 for. Desided I didn't want to reload another round. To find any of these will require patience. Prices on the Marlin pistol caliber levers are usually $500 on up.

Semi or Lever 22 mag: I'll see if I can find something on the used market. IMO, there just isn't enough "gain" over a .22lr to justify spending much mony on the .22 mag. Passed on a NEW Henry .22 mag for $339 today. Just seems wrong to pay more for a Henry rimfire gun than for a quality Marlin 30/30. See if I can find something closer to $200 for a used Henry. Or see if I can find a Rem semi or Win 9422 in my price range. On a sad note.....one of the shops that I stopped at said they sold a lever action .22 mag the other day for $150 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif I didn't ask or want to know any more!!!

30/30 lever gun: Like I said I passed on 2 yesterday priced at $250-$275. Might still go get one of them. 4 reasons I consider these: Cost, availabilty, size/weight and I already have all the reloading supplies and some ammo for it. It's a little on the big side for a varmint gun but I'm thinking that I might try some reduced power 125 gr. reloads for it. Might also try some .30 carbine soft points of various weights in it. Will the round nosed 30 carbine SP's be safe to use in it? Guess I'd better find out before I try it.

I'll have to shop around to find what I want. I guess patience is a virtue. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

that is what i was going to say or there is a baikal version for less money and double triggers .

They are available in all sorts of combinations 20 or 12 and rimfire on through the center fires. only problem they are a little heavy.
 
I've thought that a Howa ranchland companct rifle in .223 would be a quick handling outfit. I haven't owned the ranchland version, but it have checked them out and they feel good. Just a thought.
 
My bad on that on RagnCajn. I should of said "would .30 carbine "ROUND NOSE BULLETS" be safe to use in it. Don't think you'd even get a primer strike if you chambered the .30 carbine into the 30-30.

I had a 5 mm mag when they first came out....loved it and shot it a lot. We need a good , tough ,semi-auto ,light weight gun that shoots 17hmr ,22mag, 5mm , 22 hornet ,ect. SM
 
i know you said you didnt want a rimfire .17 but i have shot prairee dogs about 250 yards out with my savage 17 hmr(we stepped it off) and i have shot coyotes with it if they get within 100 yards they are accurate enough to head shoot them...another thing that one of my friends has is a .17 mach 2
 
I'll plead "stupid" when it comes to the 5mm. From what I've heard it sounds like a rimfire capable of coyotes which is exactly what we/I want. Looks like we need lots of prayers though.......

I'll give another vote for a good semi or lever in a 5mm, .221, .218 or a hornet though. Thinkin a 10/22 designed around Rugers rotary mag 77/hornet would be great. Aren't the 77/hornet barrels mounted the same as the 10/22 and the 10/22 mag? Somebody come up with a milled steal receiver and a new bolt and we'll be off and running. Ruger barrel, stock and trigger assembly and we have it.
 
Unfortunatly the 7722H's barrel is screwed on. Good idea though...

Chris.... while I agree with you and spyderman about the need for a nice little woods gun in 5mm or one of the Hornet varients,, please take the semi auto out of the equasion. They just don't have the cool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif factor that a nice lever or even bolt gun has.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Take a look at Brian M's little Contender carbine in the 17A.Hornet thread. I know it's a single shot but after seeing his I think I could learn to like one of the contenders.
Some of the Hound Hunters up here use the Contender Carbines for treed Cats. They fit right in a back-pack and seem plenty accurate..

Speaking as a Choate stocked Savage shooter here.......There is nothing cool about my bolt gun!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But man can it shoot!
