10/22 for coyotes

My friend and I were talking about guns lately, as we usually do. The 10/22 came into discussion. Would this caliber work well for coyotes and if so, to what range effectively?

I think the .22lr caliber is humane to use at contact distance if the shot is carefully aimed for (muzzle placed against) the brain pan. This would be the case where a coyote was hit by a vehicle and is not dead yet or similar euthanasia situation.

To actually intentionally hunt coyote with any .22lr is not a very good idea. You will likely seriously wound more critters than you will kill (humane killing is the idea, after all).

Better to use a CF 22 or a shotgun (proper shot size, too), or one of the sub-caliber, high speed cartridges (.17, .19, .20, etc.) for hunting predators that may weigh 20-40 pounds.

.22 lr is great for rabbits and like critters.

Just a thought....

22 LR for coyotes........ I will say yes. At least for me personally. Keep shots within about 50 yards and shoot for the head or spine. Try some CCI Velocitors, they carry quite a bit more enegry than a standard velocity round. I wouldn't recomend CCI Stingers because of the testing that I have done with them. in both sand and newspaper the Velocitors hold together but the Stingers just fragment all over the place. If I had a choice I would much rather use a shotgun.

Save your .22LR for rabbits squirrels and other small pests, it's not fit for larger predators such as a coyote.

Three yrs ago,
a friend was out w/ screwin around plinking.
We found a Great set of tracks, and thought we'd just see whats out there.(I wasn't planning on calling that day or I'd have the swift)

I sit down,(no camo) Call and BOOM!
A coyote stands up at 40yds,

All I have is my 10-22. so I shoot him,
He yipps, and starts biting the wound.

I proceed to empty the magizine into him.

And he just runns off, never to be found.
It made me sick.

Iv'e had to shoot coyotes 4 times w/ my 220swift before, they are VERY TOUGH ANIMALS!

Save the .22 for the trapline.

I have killed hogs, too many to remember, weighing from 50-350lbs with a 10/22, I killed a bobcat at 42 steps one night.

It can be done, not reliably, not humanely. David did kill Goliath with a sling and rock.
I wouldn't pause second to shoot a coyote with one, because I do not consider a coyote a sporting animal. They are varmits. They eat our sheep, deer, goats, and keep me up at night. I wouldn't knowingly go hunting for them with a 10/22 though. I would with a .22 mag. But I would be very careful with my shots.

Hey so do my next door neighbors, but I wouldn't shoot them with a .22lr.

Seriously, every animal deserves a clean, one shot kill if possible. It is your duty and responsibility as a hunter to give the animal a quick death. Just my $.02.

If you shoot he High Velocity .22LR and proper placement I think you will be fine, because these High energy .22LR are more powerful than most average .22 Mag ammo.

Look at the ballistics.

CCI Stingers 20"
CCI Velocitors

Remington Yellow Jackets
Remington Vipers
All have or 1500FPS in a 20" barrel, Except the stingers and another are at 1750FPS.

I have bought .22Mag ammo that was around 1350FPS.

You aren't seriously thinking of shooting yotes with a .22 are you? That is a difinate NO NO!
I would even consider the .22WMR to small. Stick with one of the .22 centerfires such as a .223 or a .22-250.

If you don't plan on keeping the pelts use your deer gun. Better to kill them with one humane shot and get a bit of splater than to empty an intire clip on the animal just to have it bolt off and die a long and painfull death.

Just my $0.02

Sure a .22 rimfire works great on yotes. The hard part is sneaking up on them while they’re asleep holding the barrel one inch from their eye and pulling the trigger Ha Ha /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif just kidding, but that is the only sure way I can think of to kill the varmints with such a weak round. I mean a lot of folks don’t believe in shooting them with a .17rem but a .22 come on now you have got to be kidding.

No vrmntslyr, it can be done, just make sure that your within 30-40yds from it...

... And that the leg trap is securely attached to the ground, lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif j.k.

I agree with the group; the .22 rimfire should never be the round of choice for predators. Save it for plinking, squirrells, rabbits and such. Too much chance for wounding an animal the size of a coyote and having it run off to die a slow, painful death. Not worthy of this superb little predator. Antics such as this only gives the anti's more ammunition as well. As I believe Elmer Keith used to say, "use enuff gun".

Besides, it makes the perfect excuse for yet another weapon in the safe !!

BOY, i hate to do it, but I am going to have to disagree. I have shot at least fifty coyotes with my .22lr hit them in the head at under fifty yards, and they go nowhere. The real benefit to the .22 can be seen from last weekend. Just at daylight my buddy and I were calling, and coyotes were appearing on the horizon. at least seven coyotes were on their way to the call. The first one came in at full speed, and I shot him between the eyes at 20 yards. I called while i shot, and his partner coninued to close the distance, I shot her at 10-15 yards. The other coyotes were still wary, but a little more coaxing, and another onr came in to my buddy, who plugged her. This final shot froze the coyotes that were at a distance, and I nailed one of them at 200 yards with my AR, which had been waiting at my side. Four coyotes in one setup. That is the benefit of shooting the relatively quiet .22 at close range. the other benefit is semi-auto. purist

BULLET PLACEMENT!!! Through the heart/lungs will work out to not much over 50 yds. Have had good experiences with CCI Mini-mag HPs. That is NOT my first choice, but will work. SEE FIRST TWO WORDS!!!

mark BULLET PLACEMENT!!! ??? i got a question then and it just my personal feeling backed with the truth. i was carrying my ruger 22 for squirrels, i came though a patch of brush and there not 30 yards from me was a yote. i put 5 bullets in heart lungs "if the bullet went that far" 2 in the guts. well after an hour i got the dogs out looking for it. about 500 yards from where the shooting took place lay the coyote still not quite dead. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif now i got 8 shots off under 90 yards. 3 where within 35 probally. well i missed once and put 7 shots that should have layed him down. semi came in handy there. "now whenever i hunt squirrel i take at least the 22 mag'

The moderators need to remove these kinds of posts. Those of us that live in Texas and have shot jack rabbits KNOW good and damn well that the 22 LR in any rifle is NOT a hunting round on coyotes, and I know all of you Davy Crockett's that can shoot the eye out of knat at 100 yard and all that BS, it is IMMORAL to use this round on game this size, period!
