Hey guys and gals,
I would am in the market for a 10mm pistol for general shooting, maybe a shot at a whitetail every now and then.(Close range of corse /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif) What brand would you guys recommend? Any advice would also be apprciated as my only experience w/ handguns is shooting my dads 40 S&W and 357 & 44 mags.(although i do that often /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) This will be my fist handgun that I own. Thanx guys

There are only two I would recommend for hunting. Either a Glock 20, or a S&W 610. If H&K ever makes one, it will be mine.

I had the Glock and the Kimber, Very good caliber, Buffalo Bore is even loading some VERY stout rounds for it. 200 gr at 1200 FPS, 180's at 1350fps /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I would also highly recommend the Colt Delta Elite if you can swing it. If you plan on reloading for it, DO NOT get the Glock, it has an unsupported chamber and unless you load way weak (what's the point in having a ten then?) it will split cases and break your big toe when the mag comes flying out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.

You could take a look at the Dan Wesson 10MM which is built on the 1911. Don't know much about it except I really want one! It's a real nice looking piece of steel.

Dan Wesson pretty much owns the 1911 10MM market right now. You should check out www.10mmtalk.com There's a lot of good information there. Check out www.danwessonfirearms.com for their specs if you're looking for a 10MM 1911. I wouldn't consider a Kimber because of their mickey mouse series II safety design.

I have a Dan Wesson PT-CBOB and love it. I also have a PM7-C in 10MM. I don't know what the local laws are for you concerning auto pistols and hunting. Indiana doesn't allow them for hunting whitetails.

[EDIT]

WTF, this thread just doesn't work without pics! LOL

I've got several 10s. Colt Gold Cup, Delta Elite, Stainless. Smith & Wesson 1006. Kimber custom target and of course, an AR-15!

I shot a northern whitetail with the Delta Elite last fall but I think my favorite is the Smith 1006. I don't know why, It was the first that I owned and it's the first I grab when I go out the door.

+1 on the USP. If H&K made one....I would have it!

Don't believe that crap about not being able to reload for the Glock. I reloaded with my factory barrel for the first 1000 rounds (you won't be able to afford to shoot it with out reloading), then swithched to a 6" KKM Barrel more velocity for hunting and more support on the chamber, plus match grade. I have the Glock and wouldn't trade it for anything. Its reliable and bullet proof.

I have to agree as I'm in my 23 year of reloading and am a chronic "Glockaholic" (unrecovering)thank you very much and am at 27 and still buying. All I ever shoot anymore is my stuff and load for business most of the time in 10mm with memories of the Norma loads not to far off the mark. Glock is very big on liability and that is understandable and have come to a comfortable realm (due to sheer # of rounds loaded and shot) in my experience that if you stay with the published data religiously and back off the max's 10% to start with new brass on the authoritative loads there is little to be concerned with. However those who are new to the reloading world should really use sensible caution as "stuff happens" and seems to occur either in the learning curve or just about the time you "think" you have it figured out.
It is understandable that with the way glock builds there barrels (theoretically) that a novice who puts off the cleaning process and uses lead could have an incident of the rude nature. I myself have never changed to an aftermarket barrel as a necessity or otherwise and have been happy with the results. Most of my accuracy issues are directly related to these 43 year old eye's in this 43 year old head with a 19 year old brain refusing to accompany the rest of me. Anyway, +1 on the Glock (all of 'em)

I agree with Gary P.

The Glock 20c is the most comfortable 10mm to shoot, fits the hand better and therefore the most accurate (for the average shooter)of all the 10mm pistols. After market barrels do have better supported chambers but the factory barrel won't be a problem for any factory ammo or reloads provided you don't exceed maximums or load lead bullets (Glock rifling design encourages rapid lead build up if shooting all-lead bullets which can lead to a "kaboom", but not a problem with after market barrels.)

Buy anything but the S&W 1006. They tend to beat themselves to pieces due the prolonged heavy recoil. I was the rangemaster and instructor for a department that issued them in the early 90s and most of them had more frequent flyer miles to the east coast than the average traveling salesman. The rolling recoil is so heavy that it takes an expert to shoot them with any consistancy. You've got to like the punishment they deal out. We got rid of them after three years of constance maintenance problems and poor shooter performance.

Well, I stand corrected I guess. It's not totally crap however, the incident did happen to me. Against some others' advice, I reloaded some fairly hot but not max loads for my Glock model 29. I was shooting once fired Norma brass, and I don't remember the load, but the case ruptured and the magazine did come shooting out the bottom, blew one of the lips off the magazine, did hit me right on the big toe, hurt like heck. I totally forgot about the Dan Wesson, that'll be my next Ten.

A gun for general shooting most times aint up to snuff for hunting. A self defense/combat pistol will have a shorter barrel, lighter weight, & combat/defense accuracy. A handgun designed for hunting will be heavier with longer barrel, longer sight plane, better sights, usualy more accurate, and yeilds more velocity. Someone mentioned semi-autos are not legal for hunting in PA. My state requires a .357 caliber & up with at least 6" barrel. That rules out most combat handguns.

If your serious about hunting whitetail with a handgun, I would recommend a T/C Contender,Encore, G2, or longer barrel revolver. I would have to be plenty close with a Glock20 or Colt Delta Elite, to feel confident of making a good killing shot on a whitetail. I figure most can shoot them better than me, but precise aiming at longer range is tough with those type weapons. I wouldn't consider using my Encore for self defense, unless in an emergency. I have weapons better suited for that role. You have to decide which type suits your needs, & type of shooting. Or buy several like the rest of us /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Take care,

I don't think anyone mentioned this but doesn't CZ have a long barreled target sighted single action varient of their pistol available? Seems I saw you could even get it in camo finish?

I used to own a Colt Delta Elite that was a decent pistol. It most likely would have been deer capable to 50 yards or so. The most remarkable shot I made with that gun was on a feral dog that was giving animal control fits. This big old rough mongrel was pretty mean and was wrestling around with the animal control officer at the end of one of those catch poles. We were out on the far end of a rural subdivision with nothing but woods behind us. The dog had killed another dog and "menaced" several people in the area and they wanted it gone. Animal control had been having the devil trying to catch it. The dog broke loose and took off in a gallop for the woods. I was tired of getting called out on this thing and I guess I just sort of reacted (lost my patience). The homeowner screamed "oh my God - SHOOT IT!" The Colt came out of the holster, the safety snapped off crisply, the front sight found the Hound of the Baskervilles as the dog had been named by the folks who lived around there. One trigger stroke and a 175 grain Winchester Silvertip impacted exactly through the back of the dogs cranium at around 25 yards or so. There was a low whistle from the crowd assembled there, I holstered and in my best John Wayne voice said, "Problem solved." One of those absolute pure crap luck shots, but I wasn't about to let anyone else know it. I got back in the patrol car and acted as if I did that sort of thing everyday. Keep in mind I've been a copper for a long time and this happened years ago before anyone knew what the intials PC stood for.

Thanx for all the reply fellas, I intent wasnt to get this pistol for hunting, i actually want one for general purpose shooting and plinking.(and just to have one) I am also looking into one of those new S&W 460's for whitetail hunting. This 10mm would be just for plinking, and MAYBE a shot at a whitetail someday, but most likey NOT. Just wanted to clear that up. Sorry for any misunderstandings. Thanx again guys.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif What a load.... Guess I better buy some steel toe boots & quit shootin all that hot stuff.....
