110 gr in .308 Win?

I have a friend who wants to try 110 gr VMAX in his Winchester Model 88 .308 - it's an older lever action rifle. The rifle has a 1:12 twist. From what I've heard and read, the .308 doesn't like 110 gr bullets unless it is a slower twist. Anyone have some input on this subject? Thanks in advance!

Scott,

I ran the 110g Vmax out of my Rem 700 VS in .308. It loved them. I also ran 125g Speer TNT's out of my stock Rem VS. I shot them out to 700yds with good result.

My factory VS has a 1/12" twist and they flew fine out of it.

I'm not sure if I'd load them up for a Lever action, unless I was single loading them.

I shot the 110's with H322, the load would blow up a lever gun.

If your buddy is willing to try the 125g Speer TNT for varmints or the Sierra 125g for deer, then Win 748 will be your answer, very accurate and fast with very resonable pressures.

SuperSeal110, that's some darn nice shooting right there. Were those shots made using the 110 gr bullets? The lever action rifle my friend uses is magazine fed - so multiple rounds ought to be fine, yes?

ackleyman, are you thinking the pressures associated with the 110 gr bullet is too much for a lever action? My friend is wanting to shoot a lighter bullet at coyotes than what he uses for deer. Thanks for the info on the 125 gr Speer TNT.

Thank you for the input, guys. My original suggestion to my friend was to stay away from light bullets in the .308, but I don't blame him for wanting light rounds for coyotes and such.

SDS, Those were with 125g TnT's. I only bought 100 of the 110g Vmax since of the price. They did shoot good, but I couldn't justify the price vs the TnT's. I ran the 125 TnT's out to 1k on steel gongs. Accuracy dropped of quickly after 700yds.

I loaded the 110g and 125g with H4895.

I get exceptional accuracy with the 125 grain bullets in my Rem 722 in 300 Savage. The 125 gn Speer TNT and Nosler's 125 BT.
I was never able to get any kind od good accuracy with the 30 caliber 110 grain bullets. That doesn't imply that your rifle won't shoot them either; just my experience.

I have run the 110gr and the 125tnt and I love the tnt in my 700p and win 70 tactical ....a side note I have had great results with sierra single shot pistol bullets and picked up 500 for a song as hand gun hunting is not legal in Canada and the shop owner ordered 5x100 packs by mistake @ rifle vel. they are XXX explosive

SS110 I have shot these @ 1km also and agree 650-700 and it starts to spray a bit lol
just out of curiosity what is your fave long long range load?
for me it is a 155gr palma match with BLC-2 @ 2900fps

Jonathan,

155g Scenar's @ 2950 w/R15. Turns the .308 into a .260. I wouldn't run any other bullet for LR target shooting in the .308 then the 155's.

Thanks superSeal 110
I have been podering that bullet for a bit now and was wondering if they were worth the extra $ compared to the Sierra Palma Match

have you taken any game with them?
I do not think I have to do the Match bullet dance with you as from your experience I know that you will agree that shot placement is key expansion is secondary.....to all those whom disagree .....stand in front of a well placed FMJ and try not to bleed out!
I have taken 3 deer with .223 55gr V-Max from 250-363yards
all ear shots and all fatal right there!
I have a spot to hunt Deer on corn/soy this year and set stands for three of us to cover approximately 800 yards in 3 directions I am shooting a .308 Win mod.70 tactical and my bud a custom made 6.5-x284 and my Dad is shooting my old yote gun rem 700 H/B .243win shooting 80 gr Sierra Game Kings he will be in a spot that a long shot will be 400 yards and he is all practiced up and hitting ground hogs out to 650-700 yards with out a hick-up.
I have not used the 155gr palma,s for game yet and although I am not worried I would only be to happy to take advice from someone whom has experienced 155gr .308 match on(Warm/wet)media lol Thanks in advanced

thank you Jack....know your target and know your gun and most importantly know your limitations and do not exceed them!
I think that the game whether it be a Deer or a Ground hog
deserves the respect of a well placed round!
