hey i got a shotgun (1100) its only shots 2 3/4 shells and i was wondering if i put a 3 in. barrel can i shoot 3in. shelsls or will it not eject them????

This actually gets a "complicated" maybe... I strongly suggest you do some research on the company sites for the various after market barrels... I have no first hand experience. But, I do know that "some" aftermarket barrel makers "claim" you can fire 3" shells in 3" barrels on what were orioginally 2 3/4" receivers. (And, I believe this is only with steel shot) But, I adamantly disavow any attempt to attribute advice to do so to me in any way, shape or form. I am merely suggesting that further research is required.

I have done this and my memory says it will eject them.
The magnum barrel ejector is set back an additional 1/4
which is on the barrel extention to handle 3" shells. Your over all safety concern is bolt thrust from shooting the 3" shell. Also the magnum barrel only has one gas port to reduce addtional gases( the 2 3/4 barrel has 2 gas ports).

The only issue is the 1100 magnum uses a magnum bolt carrier
that the 2 3/4 inch barrel does not have. You can call
Remington at 1-800-243-9700 and buy the required reciever parts to shoot 3" shells.

Calling Remington is good advice! I was thinking that you also need a new action spring in addition to the bolt carrier but I'm not sure! In any case the recievers are the same, just different internals.

I could be wrong...it's happened before

The whole reason that the 11-87 is the 1987 update to the 1100 design and that using 3" shells were cracking those 1100 bolts....among other improvements.

2 3/4" shells are pretty good in themselves. For the cost of changing that gun you can buy alot of premium 2 3/4's. Heavy shot, Tungsten matrix, and Bismuth will make the short shells really effective. The only reason I shoot 3" shell for waterfowl is that it is simple to tell steel from lead as all my lead and upland shells are 2 3/4. Investing in a couple cases of shell and some shooting instructions at your local sporting clays course will make that 1100 far better than changing it to 3"mag.

Do not, ever, put any shell or cartridge in any gun that it was not designed to shoot. It is 2 3/4" for a reason.

If its a L or M or N pre-fix serial # the answer is NO but to be sure what is the Serial # range.

The early 1100 ejection port were shorter and the 3" mag models had the additional 1/4 "

Now the difference is is the ejectors and postion of the extractors between 2 3/4 & 3"

Also the Mag barrels had 1 gas port in the lead days while the 2 3/4' had 2 smaller holes.

My advise is not to do this. It will shoot them but they won't eject the rounds and will jam most of the time. The ejection port is not long enough and you will experience problems in the long run with your shotgun.

The reason for dis-continue of the 3" 1100 was Rem could not get it to function 100%. The problem was they did not drill the gas port hole large enough. Use to buy up all the 3" 1100's at gun shows for $150 because they were single shot wonders. After we drilled out the gas port, used them to make $1000.00 competition shotguns used in 3-gun matches.
