A buddy and I were out fishing today. In conversation about all things important, this question arouse. Is it safe to shoot 12ga. marine flares out of a 12ga. single shot shotgun? I know somebody here has tried it, please let me know. We do not really have any plans to do this, just curious. Thanks!

Guess I'm not sure of what exactly a "marine flare" is. I've shot the "dragon's breath" stuff from my NEF singleshot.
Provided you are talking the correct chamber length(2-3/4, or 3") 12ga, is a 12ga.

Can you hand load 12ga flares to get higher velocities/altitudes.

I shot one about 10 years ago and it wasnt that great. Thing was I spent a year trying to talk my dad into letting me shoot one and he said "no." I shot one when my dad was at work, but he headed home early. Guess who I signaled my way. Got a good a$$ chewing for that one.

You're be okay. Marine flares are lower pressure rounds. They should to a shorter than a standard 2 3/4 12 gauge round. They are made shorter so some idiot can't shoot a standard 2 3/4 shotgun shell out of a plastic flare gun. Shooting a standard shotgun round out of a flare gun is illegal due to the overall leight of the flare gun. It would have to be registered as a short barreled shotgun. That is assuming that it would not blow your hand off.

Have fun and shoot away.

shot a lot of those one year on the 4th of july at my dads buddies house, went well until one popped in the barrel when his kid was shooting it, they were old though.

rang his bell
