150 grn Sierra Game Kings?

I'm no experienced elk hunter but I wouldn't choose that bullet in the .308 for elk. Good enough for deer, but I think it'd be lacking on elk. Something tougher like a Nosler Partition or the TSX would be better choices in my limited opinion on elk.

CG,
I used the 165's for a long time then I bought a box of 150 fenderal powr shocks and those really had some great stopping power for the elk. My father and I have been using the 150's for many years now with elk and they have been enought to put them down. I always had thought 150's were too small for elk also but they have proved themselved to do fine do far. I am more of the school of thought that shot placement is the most important factor.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

I know for a fact the 160 game king out of a 7 mag is serious elk medicine. They also will hammer an oryx at 427 lasered yards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hey Carl you should look at the Hornady 165gr SST's. My dad shot his bull this year with them and I've never seen an elk drop/die so fast (it wasn't a high shoulder hit either). It's the same bullet I used on my deer last year and it punched almost a fist sized hole through the deer. Granted this was in a .30-06 but I think your .308 would eat them up. These SST's shoot really well in his -06. We've had all 5-shots touching at 100 yds on a few different occasions. Plus they aren't too expensive either!

CW,
Your experience has me beat, if you like them then I figure you're gonna be enjoying the elk steaks this season! I went to the range today with my old steel frame Browning BLR .308 and a handload with a 165 gr. Sierra BTHP over a healthy charge of Varget. I got 2,628 fps from the BLR's stubby 20" barrel, which is actually a little faster than most factory loads I chrono with that bullet from that rifle. And dang does it shoot that load well! If that rifle hits the woods with me this year the whitetails in the Ozarks are gonna hate the combination! If I'm lucky where I hunt I could stumble across a feral hog too and I'm sure the result will be the same - dead hog down. I really like the .308 for an effecient little round that kills game very well.

I agree. Great deer bullet, but would want a tougher one for elk.......
