i have a new to me 17 ackley hornet on the way, but none of my manuals list it. is there a manual out there that has it?

As a matter of fact, the first cartridge in the first edition of the Berger Bullets Reloading Manual is the .17 Ackley Hornet.

I have been shooting the 17 AH for 20 plus years and actually think it is a better option than the new.17 HH (Hornady Hornet). That is if you are a reloader and case former. Log onto the Saubier.com website. Its a small caliber website with friendly folks and tons of info on the 17AH. The two best powders for it seem to be N120 and 1680 from my experience. I would advise to avoid Lil Gun no matter what anyone tells you.

I will and do use Lil Gun in the 22 Hornet but not the 17AH. I tried Lil Gun in the 17 but discovered that .2 of a grain can build pressure very quickly far short of listed max loads. I always start low and work up slowly so I never got into trouble myself. A couple of guys I know did lock bolts using it in the 17 AH. One thing I did notice is that in some of the handgun rounds I tried it in the barrels got really hot very quickly. For the 17 AH I found VV N120 and 1680 give me much better results and felt a little more comfortable using them. I know some guys use Lil Gun in the 17AH with good results and swear by it.
