17 ackley hornet

I am interested in a 17 ackley and wondered what is the best way to go. I know where i can get a 77/22 hornet for a good price and was wondering if the barrell is clamped to the action like on the 77/22lr. If it is can I simply buy a 17 Ackley bbl and bolt it on. Is headspace a concern or is it taken care of by headspacing on the rim. I know you can do a bolt on bbl switch on the 10/22 without headspace problems but realize a bolt action would be diff from the blowback action of the 10/22. Any insight would be appreciated. I'm sure several of you have already been down this road and I have learned to seek advice from the experts whenever possible.

Thanks REM

Rem,
Another wahy to do it is to pick up a Contender or and Ecore frame and buy a barrel from Bullberry. I got lucky and found a used .17 K-Hornet barrel for a Contender so I just traded for a Contender frame. The .17 K-Hornet is a great little round. I`m getting 3,600 fps. with a 19 grn. Calhoon bullet with 10.4 grns. of 4227. My bullberry barrel has a tight neck and the case necks must be turned. I think it`s worth the trouble though as mine shoots about 1/2MOA or alittle less if I really bear down. If you get one and don`t know exactly how to from the brass let me know and I`ll telll you.

Thanks for the replys.
I thought the Hornet bbl might be a screw-in but didn't know.
Mike was the $600 Just for the bbl and the work. I had hoped to not be too much over that for a total but not supprised.
The contender has always been an option as I have a contender already but really would like for it to be a light bolt action repeater.Would be nice to find a used bbl but can't count on that. Right now just trying to figure out all options.
Mike what length bbl do you have. Sounds like pretty good velocity. Is there a reason you shoot 19 calhouns. How do they compare to the 20 V-maxs. I shoot the 20 V-max in a 17-Mach IV and really like them but have never tried calhouns.
Anyway thanks again.

The bill is dated 1999. $175 labor to chamber and install barrel, $245 for Shilen stainless barrel,$125 to pillar bed stock, $65 for trigger job, $22 S&H...Wessinger Custom, Chapin, SC..803-345-5677...The stainless on Rugers is a dark grey color and the finish on my barrel matches. The trigger was 1lb and I have since put it up to 1 1/2lb cuz it would sometimes go off when I wasnt quite ready..a little lite for a field gun. Well anymore questions go ahead n ask..Mike in Fresno

Looking back through the old posts and found this post back on page 150 (Dec 2002).

Dumb question. How do you know if your barrel has a tight neck and you have to turn your necks???

I'm looking at buying a Bullberry 17 ackley Hornet for my contender but hadn't heard much of this.

Any gunsmith chambering a tight neck chamber will engrave the neck dimension after the chamber designation. I think you can rely on that because any gunsmith who can afford custom reamers probably has at least some assets he does not want to loose in a lawsuit.

Like most things in life it is only a 99.9% thing, but good odds.
